In this presentation we present the modernized educational approach adopted by Nightingale College which combines the technology based educational tools with traditional methods. The hybrid nursing program makes it possible to maintain individualized relationships along a greater flexibility.
2. • As one of the most disruptive innovations of
modern education, blended learning is a student-
centered approach that combines face-to-face
instruction with computer mediated instruction.
• Nursing students attend the college campus and
other sites for simulation labs and clinicals,
while they have a greater flexibility by using the
online learning environment to study course
materials.
• In this article we present the modernized
educational approach adopted by Nightingale
College which combines the technology based
educational tools with traditional methods. The
hybrid nursing program makes it possible to
maintain individualized relationships along a
greater flexibility.
3. Online learning environment
• Students benefit from a customized instruction
and assessment, and they can create their own
learning schedule by choosing the time-frame,
pace and place of their studies. In addition, they
can access the learning platform from multiple
devices, including the traditional desktop
computers and laptops along with the latest
smartphones and tablet devices.
• Students interact with the learning materials,
receive notifications from instructors, submit
assignments and take quizzes, manage their
study calendar and collaborate with other
classmates within study-groups. Using the
online education platform learning is simple and
transformative.
4. High-fidelity simulation lab
• Nightingale College educates through
simulation with three different levels of
complexity: low, medium and high-fidelity
simulation. Through high-fidelity simulation
students gain knowledge and skills in a safe and
non-threatening environment. The college
provides the most realistic simulation through
computer-based mannequins, like SimMan 3G.
• This patient simulator is designed to deliver to
nursing students the most realistic training
possible. In order to prepare and train students
for the realism of high-fidelity simulation and
clinical treatment the college also provides low
and medium fidelity simulation.
5. Personalized training
• Smaller clinical groups allow instructors to
spend more time individually with each student.
Student-to-instructor ratios are lower than
mandated by the Utah State Board of Nursing.
Each student will properly engage in critical
thinking and clinical reasoning to make effective
decisions and implement quality measures to
improve patient care.
• Upon completion of the nursing program,
Nightingale College's students will have
received the personalized training in a variety of
nursing disciplines like urgent care, obstetrics,
pediatrics, psychiatrics and medical surgical
environments.
6. Hospital clinical rotations
• Application of knowledge and skills occurs in
the nursing skills laboratory and in hospitals,
health centers, clinics and other health care
settings. While up to 25% of clinical hours are
delivered via simulation in the nursing skill
laboratories, the rest of experiences take place in
a variety of health care facilities in the form of
clinical rotations.
• Clinical experiences and preceptorships are an
integral part of the academic program, thus are
mandatory. These experiences provide the
student with the opportunity to observe and
practice the essential nursing skills that have
been introduced in didactic and lab instruction.
