2. British 60s Music Music at the beginning of the 60s was a sanitised commercial version of mid fifties American Rock'n‘Roll. Often referred to as the ‘swinging sixties’. Elvis was an established movie star and Rock'n‘Roll singer by the 60s. Artists consisted of; The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, The Who and The Beach boys. The Rolling stone had a huge #1 with ‘I can’t get no satisfaction’. The Beetle’s music in America is said to be the first British invasion: many Americans mimicked and wanted to be like the British. Music tackled the social changes of the era: relaxation of social taboos like sexism and racism.
3. American music 60s decade consisted of Black Folk music incorporated with Jazz - Motown music. Founded by Berry Gordy Jr it rooted from Detroit America: Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson were established Motown artists. 1960s super hits came from artists such as The Supremes, Aretha Franklin - Respect, The Marvelettes scored the first US #1 in this genre with ‘Please Mr Postman’ Music catered for the young energetic generation in the 60s that came of the ‘Baby Boom’ era 1946 -1947 (post war)
