2. My past is like an onion. I was born in Kansas on a farm: the sweet inner layer.
3. Kansas is the heartland of the U.S. and is covered by vast pastures and plains of wheat. My family was healthy (due to all the fresh air and food) but not wealthy. And so the onion starts to get a little zest. One day, my mother got a new washing machine. The one she had used three separate sections: one to rotate or wash the clothes, one with bleach and one with clear water or bluing to rinse the clothes. In between these sections was a wringer that you had to feed one garment at a time. The wringer pressed the excess water out of the clothes so that they could go to the next step and then out to be hung on the line to dry. As you can guess, this was very time-consuming. So, when my mom got a new washing machine, you can imagine how she felt.
