1. 1. Roots and Routes By Ms. Duke What is life…
 2. 2. My past is like an onion. I was born in Kansas on a farm: the sweet inner layer.
 3. 3. Kansas is the heartland of the U.S. and is covered by vast pastures and plains of wheat. My family was healthy (due to all the fresh air and food) but not wealthy. And so the onion starts to get a little zest. One day, my mother got a new washing machine. The one she had used three separate sections: one to rotate or wash the clothes, one with bleach and one with clear water or bluing to rinse the clothes. In between these sections was a wringer that you had to feed one garment at a time. The wringer pressed the excess water out of the clothes so that they could go to the next step and then out to be hung on the line to dry. As you can guess, this was very time-consuming. So, when my mom got a new washing machine, you can imagine how she felt.
 4. 4. My Mother Her ancestors came from the Netherlands and Germany.
 5. 5.

She put the clothes into the washer and not so patiently waited. When the washer stopped, with great fanfare and jubilation, she opened the lid, peered inside and promptly screamed: “Where are my clothes? The washer ate my clothes. Oh me, oh my?

Then…

 6. 6.

… one of my wise siblings held her flailing arms and said: “Mom, calm down! During the spin cycle, the clothes (due to centrifugal force) are drawn to the sides of the barrel. Your clothes have not been eaten; they are simply stuck to the sides. See!”

 7. 7.

My present

 8. 8.

My present

is still unfolding.

 11. 11.

I have many stories associated with Egypt. I started visiting Egypt more than 20 years ago.

On my first trip to Egypt, I went to see the Sound and Light Show at the Pyramids. We arrived early and the taxi left us out in the parking lot which back then was at least 2 miles from the entrance.

 12. 12.

As my friend and I were walking, a car full of villagers stopped and offered us a ride. Back then, unlike now, there were very few buildings around the pyramids.

We hopped in and within seconds were buying our tickets.

The trouble did not start until…

 13. 13.

… we left the show.

That’s when they told me that I could not get out until I showed them my ticket.I had the ticket to the show but could not produce the ticket they wanted.

In the meantime, I man by the wall went psst, psst. My friend and I walked over to the wall and he made a step with his hands. We climbed the wall and had a pleasant walk across the pyramid field at night.

 14. 14. On Nov. 22, 1964, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the thirty-fifth president of the United States and its first Catholic president, was assassinated in Dallas. His passing began a very violent time for the U.S. Within four years, two more leaders were assassinated: Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. Incredible Moment
 15. 15. What will the future bring?
 16. 16.

I see myself retiring on a wide veranda with a view of the sea and the full moon at night.

I plan on being very proud of all my former students as they tell me of their lives and successes.

I have no idea where.
