Twitter Experience in CI 350 at Marshall University
Following @ci350class and other educators was interesting. I follow over a hundred
people but none of them tweet about anything educational. Now that I am following some great
minds that are in the education field, I will be able to find new and exciting ideas to use in the
classroom and also expand my knowledge on educational issues.
@ci350class tweeted a link for an article about social media in education. It was very
interesting. It spoke of the negative stereotype that social media has with a lot of educators and
how that stereotype can be turned around. Social media can be a very important tool and the
classroom and is a great way to connect with students.
I followed Jerry Blumengarten @cybraryman1. He had some interesting tweets about
teens and cell phone usage. One read, “Have yet to see a teenage girl without a cell phone in her
back pocket or in her hand.” In another, @cybraryman1 tweeted, “Texting is huge with teens.
Even in restaurants see couples both with devices not talking but busy with devices.”
@cybraryman1’s tweets gives an idea of just how big the use of cell phones and social media
really is. To me, this gives me even more reason to use social media for education.
Steven W. Anderson @web20classroom tweeted about technology being used in the
classroom. He tweeted, “Hearing about Kindergarteners creating iBooks for their class and
sharing through qr codes with other classes. So awesome!” There were some motivational
tweets that I really enjoyed as well. He retweeted a tweet that read, “Before you are a leader,
2. success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing
others.” I find that to be so true. It motivates me to get to a place in my life where I can grow
others, and I believe I am almost there.
While following Eric Sheninger @NMHS_Principal, I came across an article he tweeted
called, “The Significant Benefits Of Social Learning”. It spoke of the great benefits of using the
Internet and social media in education. There are ways to teach and learn that makes education
fun and interesting for students. Social media allows social interaction and collaboration inside
and outside of the classroom.
Lastly, Josh Stumpenhorst @stumpteacher shared tweets that revolved around the same
philosophy. He shared some pictures of project-based learning activities that were really
impressive. He tweets to a lot of different people and gives his perspective on teaching as well.
In one tweet to an individual, he said, “Your views will change 100 times. If not, you are not
growing.” I really like that statement. I find this to be true in life and I’m sure I’ll find it to be
true in education once I’m a teacher.
