Step 2: Create and set up a virtual machine
Afteryouhave installed the Hyper-V managementtool, youcancreate a virtual machine andset
up an operatingsystemonthe virtual machine.
Before youcreate the virtual machine, youmayfindithelpful toconsiderthe following
questions.Youcanprovide answerstothe questionswhenyouuse the New Virtual Machine
Wizardto create the virtual machine.
 Is the installationmediaavailableforthe operatingsystemyouwanttoinstall onthe virtual
machine?Youcan use physical media,aremote image server,oran.ISO file.The method
youwant to use determineshow youshouldconfigure the virtual machine.
 How muchmemorywill youallocate tothe virtual machine?
 Where do youwantto store the virtual machine andwhatdo youwantto name it?
To create and setup a virtual machine
1. OpenHyper-V Manager.Click Start, pointtoAdministrative Tools,and thenclick Hyper-
V Manager.
2. From the Action pane, click New,andthenclick Virtual Machine.
3. From the NewVirtual Machine Wizard, clickNext.
4. On the SpecifyName and Location page, specifywhatyouwantto name the virtual
machine andwhere youwantto store it.
5. On the Memory page, specifyenoughmemorytorunthe guestoperatingsystemyou
wantto use on the virtual machine.
6. On the Networkingpage, connectthe networkadapterto an existingvirtual networkif
youwant to establishnetworkconnectivityatthispoint.
Note
If you wantto use a remote image servertoinstall anoperatingsystemonyourtest
virtual machine,selectthe externalnetwork.
7. On the ConnectVirtual Hard Disk page, specifyaname, location, andsize tocreate a
virtual harddiskso youcan install anoperatingsystemonit.
8. On the InstallationOptions page, choose the methodyouwantto use to install the
operatingsystem:
 Install anoperatingsystemfromaboot CD/DVD-ROM.Youcan use eitherphysical
mediaor an image file (.isofile).
 Install anoperatingsystemfromaboot floppydisk.
 Install anoperatingsystemfromanetwork-basedinstallationserver.Touse this
option, youmustconfigure the virtual machine with alegacynetworkadapter
connectedtoan external virtual network. The external virtualnetworkmusthave
access to the same networkasthe image server.
9. ClickFinish.
Afteryoucreate the virtual machine, youcan start the virtual machine andinstall the operating
system.
Step 3: Install the operating system and integration
services
In the final stepof thisprocess, youconnectto the virtual machine tosetup the operating
system.Aspart of the setup, youinstall asoftware package that improvesintegrationbetween
the virtualizationserverandthe virtual machine.
Note
The instructionsinthisstepassume thatyouspecifiedthe locationof the installation
mediawhenyoucreatedthe virtual machine.The instructionsalsoassume thatyouare
installinganoperatingsystemforwhichintegrationservicesare available.
To install the operating systemand integration services
1. From the Virtual Machinessectionof the resultspane,right-clickthe name of the
virtual machine youcreatedinstep2 and click Connect. The Virtual Machine Connection
tool will open.
2. From the Actionmenuinthe Virtual Machine Connectionwindow, click Start.
3. Proceedthroughthe installation.
Notes
 Whenyouare at the pointwhere youneedtoprovide inputtocomplete the
process, move the mouse cursoroverthe image of the setupwindow.Afterthe
mouse pointerchangestoa small dot, clickanywhere inthe virtual machine
window.Thisaction"captures"the mouse sothatkeyboardandmouse inputissent
to the virtual machine.Toreturnthe inputto the physical computer, press
Ctrl+Alt+Leftarrowandthenmove the mouse pointeroutside of the virtual machine
window.
 Afterthe operatingsystemissetup, youare readyto install the integrationservices.
From the Actionmenuof Virtual Machine Connection, click InsertIntegration
ServicesSetupDisk. On Windowsoperatingsystems,youmustclose the New
Hardware Wizard to start the installation. If Autorundoesnotstartthe installation
automatically,youcanstart itmanually.Clickanywhereinthe guestoperating
systemwindowandnavigate tothe CD drive.Use the methodthatisappropriate for
the guestoperatingsystemtostart the installationpackage fromthe CDdrive.
Afteryouhave completedthe setupandintegrationservicesare installed,youcanbeginusing
the virtual machine.Youcan viewormodifythe virtual hardware thatisconfiguredforthe
virtual machine byreviewingthe settingsof the virtual machine.Fromthe Virtual Machines
pane,right-clickthe name of the virtual machine thatyoucreatedinstep3 andclick Settings.
From the Settingswindow, clickthe name of the hardware toview or change it.
For more information,see ConfiguringVirtual Machines
(http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=122190).
Step 4: Configure virtual networks
You can create virtual networksonthe serverrunningHyper-V todefine variousnetworking
topologiesforvirtual machinesandthe virtualizationserver. There are three typesof virtual
networks:aprivate network,whichprovidescommunicationbetweenvirtual machinesonly,an
internal network,whichprovidescommunicationbetweenthe virtualizationserverandvirtual
machines,andan external network,whichprovidescommunicationbetweenavirtual machine
and a physical networkbycreatinganassociationtoa physical networkadapteronthe
virtualizationserver.
The followingproceduresprovide the basicinstructionsforconfiguringvirtual networks.
To create a virtual network
1. OpenHyper-V Manager.
2. From the Actionsmenu, click Virtual NetworkManager.
3. Under Create virtual network, selectthe type of networkyouwantto create. The types
of networkare External,Internal, andPrivate. If the networkyouwanttocreate isan
external network,see the “Additional considerations”sectionthatfollows.
4. ClickAdd.The NewVirtual Networkpage appears.
5. Type a name forthe newnetwork.Review the otherpropertiesandmodifythemif
necessary.
Note
You can use virtual LAN identificationasaway to isolate networktraffic.
However, thistype of configurationmustbe supportedbythe physical network
adapter.
6. ClickOK to create the virtual networkandclose Virtual NetworkManager, orclick Apply
to create the virtual networkandcontinue usingVirtual NetworkManager.
To add a network adapter to a virtual machine
1. OpenHyper-V Manager.Click Start, pointtoAdministrative Tools,and thenclick Hyper-
V Manager.
2. In the resultspane, under Virtual Machines, selectthe virtual machinethatyouwantto
configure.
3. In the Action pane, underthe virtual machine name, click Settings.
4. In the navigationpane,click AddHardware.
5. On the Add Hardware page, choose a networkadapterora legacynetworkadapter.
Networkadapterscanonlybe addedto a virtual machine whenthe machine isturned
off.For more informationabouteachtype of adapter, see the "Additional
considerations" sectionthatfollows.
6. ClickAdd.The NetworkAdapterorLegacyNetworkAdapterpage appears.
7. Under Network,selectthe virtual networkyouwanttoconnectto.
8. If you wantto configure a staticMAC addressor virtual LAN identifier, specifythe
addressor identifieryouwantto use.
9. ClickOK.
Additional considerations
 By default,membershipinthe local Administratorsgroup,or equivalent,isthe minimum
requiredtocomplete thisprocedure.However,anadministratorcanuse Authorization
Manager to modifythe authorizationpolicysothata useror group of userscan complete
thisprocedure.
 A legacynetworkadapterworkswithoutinstallingavirtual machine driverbecause the
driverisalreadyavailable onmostoperatingsystems.The legacynetworkadapteremulates
a physical networkadapter,multiportDEC21140 10/100TX 100 MB. A legacynetwork
adapteralsosupportsnetwork-basedinstallationsbecause itincludesthe abilitytobootto
the Pre-BootExecutionEnvironment(PXE).The legacynetworkadapterisnotsupportedin
the 64-bit editionof WindowsServer 2003 or the Windows XPProfessional x64Edition.
 Afteryouinstall Hyper-V andcreate anexternal virtual network, yourcomputerwill operate
differently.Afterinstallation,the parentpartitionuses avirtual networkadaptertoconnect
to the physical network.Whenyoulookat NetworkConnections on the parentpartition,
youwill see the original networkadapteranda new virtual networkadapter. The original
physical networkadapterhasnothingbound toitexceptthe MicrosoftVirtual Network
SwitchProtocol, andthe virtual networkadapternow hasall of the standardprotocolsand
servicesboundtoit.The virtual networkadapterthatappearsunder NetworkConnections
will have the same name asthe virtual networkswitchwithwhichitisassociated.Itis
possible tocreate aninternal virtual network, whichwill expose avirtual networkadapterto
the parentpartitionwithoutthe needtohave a physical networkadapterassociatedwithit.
Hyper-V onlybindsthe virtual networkservice toa physical networkadapterwhenan
external virtual networkiscreated.However,networkingwill getdisruptedforashort
periodof time onthe networkadapterwhena virtual networkgetscreatedordeleted.
