    1. CALL in Teaching EFL in China Jiezi Gao (Maggie) EFL 537
    2. What is CALL & EFL?
      • CALL stands for Computer Assistant Language Learning
      • EFL means teach English As A Foreign Language
    3. Why we use CALL?
      • Computers can handle a range of activities and carry out programmed functions at amazing speed. They can check exercises after they are done, move students gradually from easier to more difficult exercises according to their levels and abilities. When students fail to answer questions correctly or perform activities, the computer can simulate, drill, or explain the phenomenon in a way that makes it easier for the learner to understand (Hoffman, 1996).
    4. Problems
        • Technique support
        • Most schools in China can not meet the need of CALL.
        • Teacher support
        • More teachers with CALL experience are required.
        • Students’ background information
        • Some students, especially the students from countryside have no experience of computer at all.
    5. Problems (cont)
        • Class size
        • In China, the number of students in class is not only big, but huge, and this situation makes it difficult for both teachers and students to use computer in class.
        • Educational style
        • The educational style in China is the traditional way: pencil and paper. And teachers prefer to teach students by textbooks.
    6. Solutions
      • Provide enough technique and teacher support
      • Help students have the basic computer skills and background information
      • It is not easy to change the class size and the educational style, but we still can try to make teachers and students be familiar with the new way of teaching & learning
