Bauer would be the best media institution to distribute the author's magazine "MUSE" for three key reasons:
1. Bauer already distributes "Q" magazine, which was a style influence for "MUSE" and has a similar target audience. This would help "MUSE" reach its audience.
2. As a major publisher, Bauer has the infrastructure to widely distribute "MUSE" across newsagents, stores and make it easy to find.
3. "MUSE" would benefit Bauer by expanding their portfolio and gaining new readers from the magazine's indie niche audience, thus increasing Bauer's profits.

1. What kind of media institution
might distribute your media product
and why?
Evaluation Q3
2. Bauer
• Bauer Media Group is a large European-based media company that manages a portfolio of more
than 600 magazines, over 400 digital products and 50 radio and TV stations around the world.
• Bauer distributes popular magazine ‘Q’ which is one of my style models, however my magazine is
more indie than Q and appeals to more of a niche audience, even if it’s quite a large one.
• If Bauer distributed my magazine then it would expand their market and gain new readers which is
beneficial to them as it would increase their profit.
• Because they are a major publishing distribution network it would make it easier for my magazine
‘MUSE’ to reach a wide audience and be sold in newsagents, major supermarkets, department
stores and music speciality stores such as HMV.
• Bauer is a market leader so the company would be well placed to promote and distribute my
magazine. It also has success in publishing music magazine like Q – however my magazine might
increase their profits because the indie vibe would have a younger target audience to Q.
• Since my magazine is aimed at a mixed gender audience, it’s a possibility that it may open a new
and interesting market for Bauer because magazines like Q tend to be aimed at an older audience,
particularly males.
• ‘MUSE’ would benefit from Bauer being a market leader that has the infrastructure in place to
widely distribute my magazine.
3. Time Inc.
• Time Inc. is a consumer magazine publisher who sell over 350 million
copies in the UK. Because of their obvious success in audience recognition
and extensive understanding in the UK, I would like them to publish and
distribute my magazine as it would allow it to reach a largely ranged
audience.
• They are publishers for NME which is another style model that inspired my
magazine ‘MUSE’ to follow indie and pop-cultured themes.
• Due to ‘MUSE’ being so similar to the magazines that Time Inc. publish, it
may gain a lot of competitors in the market, however the company would
still make a profit if they distributed my magazine because it would
increase their portfolio which they can present and sell to stockists.
• There are around 26 million adults in the UK who read magazines
published by Time Inc. meaning that there is a high chance my magazine
will be seen by the public in stores.
4. Bauer or Time Inc.?
• I would choose Bauer to distribute my magazine purely due to the
fact that they distribute Q magazine, which influenced many
aspects of my magazine. I think that ‘MUSE’ would benefit from
having Bauer as its publisher because Q’s target audience is very
similar to mine which means they will most likely be interested in
my magazine, especially if it has the same distributor as their
favourite magazine. They would most probably see my magazine
alongside Bauer-distributing magazines on the shelves such as Q
and Kerrang which is a good place for my target audience to be
introduced to the magazine.
• The reason why I didn’t choose Time Inc. is because I believe that
the competing magazines such as NME are too similar to ‘MUSE’,
whereas it has a higher chance of becoming popular alongside the
likes of Q magazine or Kerrang because of the similar aspects,
however mine is more indie therefore will appeal to a wider niche
market.
