2. What is Juxtaposition?
Juxtaposition is two opposite or contradicting objects
stood side by side in a photograph, which leads the
viewers to interpret the image themselves.
3. What creates juxtaposition?
Examples of Juxtaposed shots would be:
• A girl and a boy.
• An old object and a new object.
• An old person and a young person.
• An adult and a child.
• Different races.
• Colour contrast.
• A tall person and a small person.
• Different animals.
4. Bruce Gilden
This is a street photograph by photographer
Bruce Gilden. It shows two children of
different ages in a paddling pool. The first
child on the left looks younger. She is sat
down and looks sad and unconfident whilst
the other child is stood up smoking, looks
very confident in herself and has a
‘couldn’t-care-less’ expression on her face.
These elements are what make the
Photograph Juxtaposed.
This image above shows the contrast between two different types of people, they
might have different home lives, been brought up in different ways and have
different beliefs and influences upon them which is why they behave differently, why
one child seems sad and unconfident whilst the other does seem to care what
anybody thinks.
5. My own images
These are photographs I have taken around my home all showing juxtaposition.
You can see this as the first image shows my mum and my niece, this is
juxtaposed as my mum is an adult and my niece is only a child, it also shows
young and old. The second and fourth photograph shows my niece with my dog,
this is juxtaposed as, obviously, my niece is a human and Harvey is a dog. The
third photograph is juxtaposed as it again shows young and old, my niece and my
stepdad and it also shows female and male.
