4. MY FATHER, SUN-SUN JOHNSON

The main characters in this story are: Merton Sun-Sun Johnson and his eldest son Rami. Merton
Johnson enjoyed is hard working life, who rose to the top by becoming the biggest landowner in
the village of River Bottom. He was married to an elegant, out-of-the-ordinary women by the
name of Debbie, where they got three loved children by the names of Rami, He had a big
position, but he was generous and loves to gamble, so eventually he lost everything to his
greatest rival (Jake).
He lost everything including his home, his position, wife, and two of his beloved children. He
was left his eldest son, Rami, who remained faithful and stayed by his side, his Mule (Lizett), his
Horse (Marble) and his piece of land in River Bottom. Together they all started life all over
again.
5. COME BACK OLD IRON BLUE
Elkanah Rhule
Come Back Old Iron Blue depicts a typical rural Jamaican Village life of the sixties. It describes
life in the rural district of Rabbit Wall where during those times there was no running water or
electricity. There was not even a Motor Vehicle in the district until a man by the name of Pappy
McDonald decided to buy a Motor Car, the community spirit, togetherness and relationship is
evident in the way the people live and interact with each other.
Elkanah Rhule has crafted these characters from his own experience in the St. Catherine district
in which he grew up. To the story although at the same time depicts the varied personalities
existing in Rabbit Wall.
The main character is the infamous Old Iron Blue knows far and wide for his greed for food.
This gourmandizer is the life of the story though at times he is really disgusting.
The title “Come Back Old Iron Blue” suggests a longing for those old days when life was single
but lively. At the end of the story old Iron blue left Rabbit Wall - symbolizing an end to that era
and way of life.
6. A COW CALLED BOY
C. Everard Palmer
It is the start of a new school year in the district of Kendal, Jamaica and Josh is very determined
not to be late for school. He set off in good time, and followed by his bull calf by the name of
“BOY”. Josh has reared him all through the summer and therefore they are all ways together,
anywhere Josh goes his calf (BOY) would go too. There was uproar when Josh brought Boy to
school, after an incident between Boy and a girl who ran thought a plate glass window which
leading the headmaster’s wife to do nothing but faint, Josh is told to get rid of the calf
immediately.
His mother insists and Josh to sell Boy and also the butcher, but Josh is a fighter; he organize a
demonstration and a hunger strike and keeping his problem in the public eye. The villages of
Kendal were hostile at first, are soon on his side. Which lead embarrassment on the butcher,
where later he realizes that he has not been cleaver as he though.
7. BABA AND MR BIG
C. Everard Palmer
Jim Anderson is lonely when man when his family move from Savanna-la-Mar to Kendal,
Jamaica. Wanting to make friends he accepts the challenge from a group of local boys which
will give him the right to join their secret club. The challenge is to capture the local chicken
thief, a wild hawk with the “voice of a king”. Jim quickly accepts the challenge, and with the
help of Baba. A lonely independent old man, Mr. Big catches the hawk.
At this point, when Jim thinks his problems were over it as just began. Unexpectedly the gangs
are not at all pleased by Jim’s success. Unexpectedly Jim finds he is not prepared to hand over
Mr. Big to the villagers of Kendal to be shot, Mr. Big thrives in captivity.
