4. Milward and Provan, in a 2006 report for
the IBM Center for The Business of
Government, observed that " . . .
maintaining accountability is critical for
network performance and for continued
flow of resources.“
“Until the accountability issue is
resolved, increasing the use of
collaborative networks will be difficult.“
5. “If an organization has its processes run through their
social network, it’s easy to see who is completing the
work and when.“
“High achievers become much easier to spot and
perpetual slackers will have a much more difficult time
sliding under the radar.“
“This kind of accountability may not be extremely
popular to begin with, but increased transparency
in how processes are handled, and knowing
exactly who does what, cannot be anything but
positive.”

8. Short on Time, Not on Ideas
All new answers of “did you read my ….”
Email vs. Status Updates
Blogs vs. Wikis
Management doesn’t care (usually)
– They also don’t read status updates…regularly
10. Accountability Depths of Hell
Method Accountability Limitations
Email Yes, but… Synchronous and Asynchronous
SMS Not Really VERY Asynchronous
IM No Only works when online, Security
What’s App? No ONLY works on phones…
Twitter No Only works when online, Security
Status
Updates
Yes, but…
If email notifications turned on, see
Email, else only works when online
Facebook ROTFLMAO Security, integration to the Enterprise
Pager Never was Too many reasons to list
11. Milward and Provan, in their 2006
report for the IBM Center for The
Business of Government, observed…
"Network managers have a major
responsibility to ensure that those who
participate in a network are responsible
for their share of network activities and
are held accountable for their actions."
But what constitutes "accountability"
in a networked, interdependent
environment?
12. “A lot goes into making a technology
adoption decision, such as your current
platforms, your current capabilities, what
you need to be able to do.
Alignment and accountability can provide
valuable input in developing your
technology road map and your
process and skills requirements.”

founder VisionEdge Marketing http://goo.gl/E845MA
13. Clarify each individual’s responsibility and authority
within the scope of their role. Ensure that expectations
are clearly understood.
Make sure employees have someone to “answer to”,
not only for accountability, but also for guidance and
leadership.
Let the front line handle the details as long as progress
is made toward goals. Clarify authorities and
accountabilities if not.
Verify that the organizational structure supports
effective communication.
Establish clear lines of communication,
authority, and accountability

14. A Manager’s Guide to Choosing and
Using Collaborative Networks
Millward and Provan (2006)
Managers of effective networks focus on five tasks:
1. Management of accountability
2. Management of legitimacy
3. Management of conflict
4. Management of design, or governance
5. Management of commitment

Editor's Notes
Sometimes it seems the link between email and social networks is missing something, like a bridge to get from A to C you need a B
Do I/we…hold the power?
Do I/we…create the power?
Do I/we…share the power?
Do I/we…distribute the power?
Email is ubiquitous. Everyone uses it…or do they? The younger generation has little interest in using email as a communication method. Instead they want to leverage more synchronous efforts like what’s app or asynchronous efforts like facebook or instagram messengers and sms. They all have one problem, accountability.
