30. DIFFERENT SPECIES OF BEES
• There are about 20,000
different species of bees in
the world.
31. QUEENBEE, WORKER, DRONE
• There is the queen bee, the worker bee
and the drone. The worker bee and the
queen bee are both female, but only the
queen bee can reproduce. All drones are
male. Worker bees clean the hive,
collecting pollen and nectar to feed the
colony and they take care of the
offspring. The drone’s only job is to
mate with the queen. The queen’s only
job is to lay eggs.
32.
33. BEES VENOM
• Bees store their venom in a sac
attached to their stinger and only
female bees sting. That is because the
stinger, called an ovipositor, is part of
the female bee’s reproductive design.
35. BEES FOOD SOURCES
• Not only is pollen a food source for
bees, but some of the pollen is dropped
in flight, resulting in cross pollination.
The relationship between the plant and
the insect is calledsymbiosis.
37. WHY BEES DIE AFTER
STINGING SOMEONE
• Certain species of bees die after
stinging because their stingers, which
are attached to their abdomen, have
little barbs or hooks on them. When this
type of bee tries to fly away after
stinging something, part of the abdomen
is ripped away.
39. Bumble Bees
• Bumblebees are considered to be
beneficial insects because theypollinate
crops and plants. They are very social
bees and live in large "families". Unlike
honeybees, bumblebees can sting more
than once because their stingers are
smooth and do not get caught in the skin
when they fly away.
41. Carpenter Bees
• Carpenter bees are solitary bees. They
build nests just for themselves and only
feed their own young. They get their
name from their ability to drill through
wood. Carpenter bee stingers are not
barbed, so they are able to sting over
and over again.
43. Honeybees
• Honeybees live in large "families" and
are found all over the world. The
honeybee is the only social insect whose
colony can survive many years. That is
because they huddle together and eat
honey to keep themselves alive during
the winter months.
44. Honeybees
• Honeybees pollinate more than 100
crops in the U.S. Their wings flap 11,000
times per minute, which is why it sounds
like they are "buzzing". Honeybees can
only sting once, because their stingers
are barbed and tear off when they try
to get away.
46. Killer Bees
• The Africanized Honeybee, also known
as the "killer bee" lives in South
America and the Western and Southern
United States. They have been known to
chase people for over a quarter of a
mile once they get excited and
aggressive.
47. Killer Bees
• Even though they are called "Killer"
bees, their venom is no more dangerous
than regular honeybees. Their attacks
are more harmful because they tend to
attack in greater numbers, increasing
your chance of having a severe
allergic reaction to the venom released
when they sting you.
48. Killer Bees
• "Killer bees" can only sting once,
because their stingers are barbed and
tear off when they try to get away.
53. • 1. Bees are flying
insects that are
closely related to
wasps and ants
and there almost
20,000 species….
honeybee,
bumblebee and
sweat bees are the
most common.
Honeybee
Wasp
Bumblebee
54. • 2. Bees are found on
every continent
except Antarctica and
in every habitat that
has flowering plants.
55. • 3. Bees feed on
nectar and pollen by
using a long tongue.
56. • 4. Bees have
antennae, two
pairs of wings,
enlarged hind feet,
fuzzy body hair,
and some have a
stinger.
57. • 5. Bees are adapted
for feeding on pollen
which they turn into
honey (a worker bee
must visit 4,000
flowers to make 1
tablespoon of
honey).
58. • 6. Bees play a very
important role in
pollinating flowering
plants and have fuzzy
bodies that allows the
pollen to stick to the
bee.
59. • 8. Crab spiders hide
in the flowers to
capture the bees
which makes
collecting pollen
dangerous work, but
the primary reason
honey bees are
endangered is
because of parasites.
60. • 9. Honey bees live in
hives or colonies
which at their peak
can have up to
40,000 bees……..the
colony is made up of
one queen bee,
thousands of female
worker bees which do
not breed, and
hundreds male drone
bees.
61. • 10. A honey bee
queen may lay 2000
eggs per day during
the spring but she
also must lay 1000 to
1500 eggs per day
when the bees are
out gathering pollen
to replace daily
casualties.
64. The Egg
• First the queen lays
an egg in the bottom
of a honey comb cell.
65. The larva
• After three days the
egg hatches and a
very small larva is
born.
66. The royal jelly
• The larva is really small
for a few days but nurse
bees will come along
many times each day and
add a white pudding - like
food to the bottom of their
cell. That food is called
royal jelly and it makes
the larva grow very big
very quickly.
67. The larvae grows
• Soon the little white
larvae will grow quite
chubby and the nurse
bees will feed it honey
and pollen. At first the
larvae will curl up in
the bottom of their
cells but soon they'll
get so big that there's
no more room to
grow.
68. Cell cap & cocoon
• After about 9 days the
worker larvae will
know it's time for a
bigmetamorphosis--a
big change. The bees
will come and put a
cap on the larva's cell
and then the larva will
spin a cocoon. After it
spins the cocoon it
will pupate.
69. The pupae-baby bee
• Then a few more
days will go by. On
the 21st day after
being born the first
time the pupae bee
will be born the
second time when it
chews the cap off its
cell and hatches as a
baby bee.
