What have you learnt from audience feedback?
Pre video completion feedback As the video was being constructed and filmed, there were people who viewed the footage I had and gave feedback. For example the first thing I learnt from audience feedback is that the library recitation section of the video was too long and became a bit tedious as it was the same position and same shot type and so the lack of variation bored people a bit, so I cut the music down a bit so as to make that section shorter and also added some variation to the shot types, including some close ups of the performer reciting the poem.
Rough Cut feedback After a few people had reviewed the Rough cut, the main criticism I took into account was that the last scene when the protagonist walks onto the stage, seemed a bit cut off from the rest of the video and a bit rushed. I tried to fix this by adding in quick flashes of the library recitation shots in sync with the lyrics and music. After I made this change, the people that gave the criticism re-watched and said that it was considerably better than before.
Questionnaire I constructed a short questionnaire in order to get some feedback from people who would be considered the target audience, for the final cut of the video, which I had people fill out through facebook and tumblr and also at school. The questionnaire can be seen below this post.
Feedback – Positive  “I liked the scene with the girl in the snow in the dress. It shows a different approach to the style of music and I liked the use of the red smoke.” “ I liked the edginess and the randomness and I thought the strangeness worked well with the song as it is a weird song “I like it's randomness, switching from different scenes and it complemented the music. The editing/effects we're done well and suited the rhythm in good time.” “I think the video matched the song well. Surreal verging on the disturbing, you obviously knew how to create a brand identity for Crystal Castles”
Feedback – Criticism “some sections could be shorter or cut up into smaller parts” “the intro could be improved by emphasising the narrative aspects”  “the scene where the girl is dancing in the white top, kinda dragged on. I'd probably shorten it and swap to the library scene, and include a new subject of maybe her convulsing?” “I think quicker cuts may have been more appropriate”
What I Learnt I learnt that the target audience enjoys the surreal aspects of the video and the dark imagery and that as a reflection of the people asked I could assume that majority of the target audience would think that the video is a good representation of the song. However some of the feedback indicated that some of the sections of the music video were a bit too long and were found to be tedious. I think this is a fair criticism as I originally envisioned the video with more variation of scenarios i.e. the beach scene and the hotel scene, but these were cut due to time and cost issues. I think if I had the opportunity to improve it I would center the video more around a narrative and also include more variety of scenarios and quicker cuts where appropriate, for example in the woods scene, to fasten the pace.
