1. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT
FROM AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
Evaluation 3
2. My main target audience was young people who were into indie/retro pop. This
is because I feel like they would be more interested in a song like this, due to
the meaning behind the lyrics and how it can relate top their own lives. It is also
clear that more females than males were interested in this genre as they had
watched this video and commented on it
3. There was a wide range of things that
people liked about my video - the
majority liking the location of the
Woodland location and the aesthetically
pleasing visuals that were used in my
video. This was done deliberately to that
the upbeat tempo of the song was
reflected in the visuals I was using (e.g.
the bright colours of autumn).
Others liked the modern twist that I had
put on the genre through the narrative
and fashion choices. This was to add
modern elements to a retro genre.
It is very common that in pop videos the
editing is fast paced. I decided to add in
lots of fast paced editing, to help reflect
the genre, along side slower editing in
some sections. This was so that I could
slow the video down and allowed the
audience to focus on what is going on. I
found that when looking at real media
texts, many used slower sections in the
narrative and more fast paced sections in
the performance, which I chose to adopt
4. The biggest thing that people
would change about my music
video is the last scene in the
narrative section – the fight. This is
also what I would change about my
video, because when looking back
at it, I can see the actors smiling.
This meant it lacked the drama that
I was looking for and seemed more
comical and lacking in
professionalism.
Others felt that the ambiguity of the
ending was wrong. I subverted the
genre in this way deliberately to
that the audience would be left
wanting to find out what happens.
This is also done in some music
videos to lead on to the next one,
continuing the narrative.
Also, some felt that the narrative
could have played a bigger role, as
it helped the audience understand
the lyrics and messages in the song
better.
5. The majority of people preferred the performance over the narrative. This is because I
made sure that it would be the main focus and take precedence over the narrative. In
the comments about why they chose this answer, many said it was because this was a
more “professional” part compared to the narrative. It was also more “eye catching”
for the audiences, due to the colours used in the performance locations.
During research I found that many videos focus too closely on the narrative section
and don’t put enough emphasis on the performance sections. However when the
performance sections were shown it is clear that a lot is expected of them. This is why
I spent a lot of time working on making this section more engaging for audiences.
They noticed the wide range of camera angles used so that it would be more
6. Many people were able to identify the narrative. I think this was due to the planning
that I put into it. However if I had not of done this I think that it would have been a lot
harder to recognise what the narrative was. I also tried to keep it quite simple in some
respects as to not confuse the audience. In the comments people said that the link
between the lyrics and visuals really helped them to understand it.
If I were to make my video clearer in the narrative sections, I would have re-shot some
of the unprofessional scenes and also focused more on the build up the characters
relationship. This way the audience would find it easier to establish what was going on.
7. The main reason why people said it worked well was due to the clear link between
the visuals and lyrics. This is because it made it easier for the audience to establish
what was going on, linking with Goodwin’s theory. I also found that if the audience
can understand the narrative then they can use it as an escape form the realities of
life. They can use the lyrics to interpret their own meaning, allowing the visuals to
provide a setting and narrative for this to take place.
8. This is really good to see that I have made a mostly enjoyable video for people
to watch. One of the reasons why they wouldn't’t watch it was because they
didn't’t enjoy the genre, but they felt that I had tackled it well. This is due to how
the lyrics and visuals linked together and the wide range of camera angles and
editing styles used, showing repetition of the genre. The other reason why some
people didn't’t like it was because of the fight scene and the ambiguous ending.
This was variation from the genre as I didn't’t want to keep it the same, making
it modern despite the retro elements of it.
9. Most of the feedback on my digipak and
digipak poster was positive. Most people
liked how I used the colours to keep the
location of the forest prominent. This
helped to link all my pieces together, and
link to the genre of pop. Although, the
colours I had chosen were similar to the
forest and maybe could have been
brighter.
Others liked how the strong female idea
was upheld. It helped to show the star
persona, making sure my artist was the
main focus. However some people didn't’t
like how there were lots of pictures of the
artist and could have been a little more
varied. Some also felt Katie looked moody
rather than powerful, due to the facial
expression in one of the shots.
If I were to reshot and edit my
digipak/poster, I would make sure that I
make the images a little more varied and
that my ideas were coming more clearly
10. Everyone said that my
products worked well together.
This was because of how well
my products linked with the
music video, keeping key
themes prominent through all
of my products. This is good as
I made sure that the main
message was coming across
and it was only small details
that would have made it better
and more professional looking.
Another thing that made my
products work well was
keeping the theme of autumn
central to my products, making
it seem professional and
interlinking.
Most people also liked how the
singer was linked in
performance, narrative and
images, helping to reflect and
understand the artist better.
They also liked how I made
pop classy rather than classic,
11. • They liked how I made the themes of my products run through all of them, so
that the audience would understand how they were linked.
• They liked the locations and how they differed from one another, helping them
to see what type of action would be taking place
• They liked the modern twist I had added to a retro genre, yet how I had also
kept my products within its limits.
• They like how I linked the lyrics and visuals – even the spin on the narrative
• Some people liked the ambiguous ending, whereas other didn't as they felt that
my narrative could have been better with a closed ending.
• They didn't’t like the fight scene as they felt it was the most unprofessional
section
