Grilling Safety
1.
2. We’re fast approaching summer and what would summer be
without GRILLING?
Although grilling can be an enjoyable
experience it can also be quite
dangerous if not done in a safe manner.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Department
of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services
would like to provide you some grilling
safety tips to keep you and your loved
ones safe this summer grilling season.
3. BBQ Grills, both propane and charcoal, should NEVER
be used indoors for any reason. Carbon Monoxide is a
deadly gas that can be produced by these devices.
Because of this, grills of any type other than electric
should always be used outside.
Grills should be kept a safe distance from any structure
when in use. It is recommended that they be used a
minimum of ten feet from any structure or opening to a
structure.
Never leave a grill that is in use unattended.
Always keep children and pets well away from the grilling
area.
4. Always examine your grill and LP tank before use and
check for any abrasions, cuts or loose connections in
any of the LP gas hose lines.
Before igniting the grill you can test for any leaks by
filling a spray bottle with dish soap and water, then
applying the mixture on the hoses. Leaks can be
detected by “bubbles” in the line and connections.
If leaks are detected do not use the grill until the leaking
lines have been replaced and/or loose connections have
been tightened until no more “bubbles” are detected.
5. Also check to make sure all the burners are in good
condition and that the structural integrity of the grill is in
tact.
Keep your grill clean and free from excess fat buildup by
emptying the grease traps and trays below the grill.
Always make sure the grill lid is open and the control
knobs are in the “OFF” position before turning the main
gas valve “ON” at the LP Tank.
At the end of each grilling use, make sure the main gas
valve on the LP Tank is returned to the “OFF” position for
storage until future use.
6. If using a starter fluid for charcoal grills, use only a
charcoal grill starter fluid that is specifically designed for
charcoal use. Soak the coals with the starter fluid and
wait several minutes for the fluid to completely soak into
the coals before igniting. Once lit, never pour additional
starter or flammable/combustible fluids on the fire.
Always keep the charcoal fluid out of the reach of
children and away from all heat or ignition sources.
When you are finished grilling, allow the coals to
completely cool before placing them in a metal container
for disposal.
7. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency
Services wishes you and your family a happy, healthy and safe summer!
