John Locke was an English philosopher considered one of the most influential Enlightenment thinkers. He was born in 1632 in England and studied at Oxford University. Some of his most important works included Two Treatises of Government, where he argued that government is a social contract between rulers and the people, and An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, where he proposed the theory of tabula rasa and emphasized the role of experience and sensation in understanding. Locke was an advocate of individual rights and limited government. He greatly influenced political and philosophical thinking during the Enlightenment period.
