1. Costs:
I am going to illustrate my images for the graphic novel and so will be buying
some stationary for this. I will need some pencils, fine liners, ruler and colouring
pencils. These items will carry a small cost but this will be the only cost I must
pay. College can provide paper and the computer programmes I may choose to
make use of are also provided freely.
Available resources:
I can use the college iMacs to do research, allowing me to find a good target
audience and gain a better understanding of the market I am going for. I can look
at other existing products that are similar to what I am hoping to make to evaluate
them and to get inspiration. Pens, pencils and other stationary are available to me
so I can use these to do flat planning, scripts and drawing my characters.
Quantity:
The quantity for my graphic novel would be quite low, as I would make it a special
edition copy for the celebration of Chinese new year 2014 on The 31st
of January.
I would make around 100 copies to make sure exclusivity is not affected and
hopefully many will desire the product.
Because of this I would be able to use a relatively small time print company and
this may save some money.
Audience and Target Market:
My target audience could be anyone over the age of 15 but I believe will largely
consist of people around the age of 15-25. This is because of the form of the
publication being a graphic novel usually read by people of around this age.
People who enjoy Chinese folk tales and legends may be interested in this type
of story and also because I will be gaining some inspiration from manga and
anime animation fans of these genres may have an interest in my graphic novel.
Also fans of graphic novels in general could be interested in my publication and
so they will be a good group of people to target as my audience.
Quality Factors:
To ensure that the quality of my work is as high as possible I will By research
existing graphic novels and looking at similar images from Chinese and Japanese
folklore to give myself ideas and a style to work from.
I will make sure I give myself the correct amount of time so that I can complete
each part of work to a high standard. Having my peers look at my work and give
me regular feedback will also improve the quality of my work as I will able to
ensure the work is good and improve it if there are things that can be improved.
2. Codes of Practice:
I must ensure that I deliver a completed manuscript according to the time
constraints of my contract or the publisher may be entitled to a refund of any
advances already paid. This would mean that I would lose money and work.
If I do not produce the good quality work that I have proposed to the publishing
house then I may also have to pay back my advance and lose money. This is
because what I have created is not what was agreed on.
If a piece of work that I create is defamatory or in any way illegal then the
publisher is in no way obligated to publish it.
Regulation:
When working at any place I must be sure to comply to the Health and Safety at Work
Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 in order
to ensure my workplace is safe. These regulations ensure things like RSI and eye injuries
in the workplace do not occur.
For some works of literacy the Obscene Publications act 1959 may have to be
considered. I do not believe I have to worry about this for my work as it is old folklore
and there is nothing that could be seen as obscene. This act is more concerned with laws
on things like pornography.
Copyright:
I am basing my story on an old Chinese folk tale and so copyright doesn’t apply,
this is because the story was made far before copyright had been invented.
Copyright only lasts for fifty years so even if it had been under copyrighting laws it
would have long expired, as my story is a few thousand years old.
Ethical Issues:
Some Chinese people may feel that my graphic novel is representing their history
and culture; therefore I must make sure I tell this story properly and accurately,
representing it well making sure they are presented in a good light.
