We are all "startups." Whether you are bootstrapping an idea, pitching a project or an entrepreneurship, you aim to have concrete impact. Consider the huge opportunities to make a difference in our neighbourhoods and world as set forth by the Sustainable Development Goals. This is our common startup.
Matter. We all want to matter in life. Matter means so many different things to everyone. Some of us have some spare cycles to matter just a bit differently. How can we do more. [Image credit: Dark Matter, Wikipedia, ccby https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_matter]
What does implementation look like? How can you make a difference?
When the SDGs were announced, there was a project called “the World’s Largest lesson”. The 17 global goals are big mandates in each of the areas. Around the world, organizations and individuals are aligning and planning implementation to meet these goals by 2030. Each of these will take all the brightest minds, especially you. Give 2 UNDP examples. What if we build digital lesson plans to help people build crowdsourcing projects? Many smart people are working on programmes, tactics and plans aimed at the targets and indicators. We collectively can help. The Social Progress Index shows that we could really consider how to improve people’s lives. https://www.ted.com/talks/michael_green_what_the_social_progress_index_can_reveal_about_your_country?language=en#t-632709
I think there are many ways to get involved. Some of you may not want to be a full startup but you want to contribute. This is why I am dedicating some time during this talk to talk about the power of volunteers for impact. In many ways some of the new innovations in humanitarian technology need a steady stream of supporters. Whether you invest time or money, this is a gift. But for the small NGOs and even the large INGOs, volunteering is at the heart of what makes a difference.
SKILLS AND TRAINING DEMONSTRATED:
Allies at Mozilla Foundation aim to “teach the web”. Their framework is complimentary. https://teach.mozilla.org/web-literacy My goal with these is to demonstrate the type of skills that Digital Humanitarians or Digital Responders use. There are many organizations, partnerships, networks and individuals. Many of these skills you see in programmes and projects. How does anyone even start to learn. Where is the ‘introduction course? Some of these core skills have manuals and whole communities around. We could keep recruiting and training. But how can we scale this in a sustainable way. Many of the groups are stretched. UN OCHA recently released the a ‘Guidance for building a local Digital Responders Network’ http://blog.veritythink.com/post/140679788344/you-can-do-it-too-guidance-for-developing-a-local
Some of the ways that you could volunteer – join the United Nations Volunteers http://www.unv.org/ , any of the Digital Humanitarian Network groups http://www.unv.org/, https://volunteer.linkedin.com/, Code Alliance http://codealliance.org/
The HOT, OSM and Missing Maps communities are one example of how you can volunteer. A number of HOT leaders were at the Understanding Risk event in Venice. We held a spontaneous mapping party in support of the Sri Lankan flood response. Fast forward a few days later, a different group of HOT leaders were at the World Humanitarian Summit sharing about the global community.
Dr. S. Amalanathan, Secretary for Development, Ministry of Disaster Management Sri Lanka took some time from his schedule while attending the World Humanitarian Summit to find HOT's booth and stop to say thank you in person to everyone contributing to this Activation mapping.

HOW CAN VOLUNTEERS GET ENGAGED/WHAT NEEDS WORK - How can we make an open api for volunteering (cross multiple org/platforms. Eg linked in,social coding for good etc. A hipmunk aggregator for volunteers. Consider is digital volunteer front page focused on the user not just the orgs? How can we surface tasks to be done that are scoped for skills, time and goals with thanks? What does an open github curriculum look like? How can we match more experienced digital skilled folks with others? In HOT we are having some questions around validation. New folks need mentorship and ‘peer’ situations. What is the online version of missing maps or other collaborative contributions? Last year I was part of an accelerator programme. We investigated how research software used for humanitarian response could be used for verticals like insurance or event management. The process of considering business models with humanitarian technology was eye opening. Today we are here at Impact Startup to consider how social enterpreneurs and businesses can make a difference. Kim Scriven of the Humanitarian Innovation Fund observed this tension of models, funding and real needs with the groups.

My goal with 1 Radio News is to get on the radar of the kinds of folks who want to invest in promoting greater global understanding via media (to the mobile generation).
With nearly 70% of my user sessions _outside_ the US, I have built a widely attractive window into radio news.
I've been bootstrapping this thing, but once I get out on iOS I will be more interested in what value folks might put on the opportunity to scale this thing.
Also, from an "external services" media perspective I am doing what none of these government broadcasters seem to do collaboratively present their offerings jointly. While many find my app the easiest way to simply listen to the BBC World Service, I would really like to see other countries chip into to help the app reach more people and then showcase those stations helping.

What do I think it the most important trends? Nothing trumps local knowledge, culture and language. The biggest theme that matters to me is the focus on local action and building with local communities. We are too smart to continue to do parachute development and technology. http://reliefweb.int/report/world/near-first-baby-2016-world-humanitarian-summit

All of this innovation from volunteering to small businesses is amazing. But if co-creators cannot be safe then we will not be able to make a difference. We need to hold our governments accountable and consider their role in innovation but also good governance to protect people more. The humanitarian principles need to be abided. Schools and hospitals are not a target.
