1. Creekview Senior Project Proposal Form 2012-13
Student Name (please print) Austin Espinoza
Teacher Lester Date August 21 2012
All questions must be completed thoroughly to receive approval for your Senior Project. Some
projects will be submitted to a committee for final approval. This form must be completed and
returned to your senior English teacher by Friday, August 17, 2012. You will not be allowed to
change your topic after October 12, 2012.
The Senior Project is subject to the plagiarism policies set forth by the district and Creekview High
School.
1) Describe the overall topic of your Senior Project.
I will be exploring sports journalism and radio broadcasting.
2) What is your previous experience in this area of study?
I have no previous experience in this area of study, but my knowledge about sports and love for
writing will help me reach my project goal.
3) To what career will you connect this project (required)?
I will connect this project to two fields of sports journalism, sports radio broadcasting and sports
columnist.
4) Describe what you are proposing to do for your Product step-by-step and in detail. Write on the
back of this sheet if necessary.
The first thing I will do to start for my product will be to sit down with my mentors and discuss how
things work in the business. I will start by learning new and interesting facts about radio
broadcasting, and understand by going and shadowing at the studio. I will also meet with a mentor to
discuss different things about being a sports columnist, and then go interview different columnists
and editors. I will meet radio broadcasters and sports columnists and see how things work
internationally by traveling to Finland. During this process I will develop a social confidence to
interact in a workplace and learn how to express my thoughts in improved writings. In the end I will
help produce a radio show at “680 The Fan” and write an article for The Cherokee Ledger News.
5) How is this project a “learning stretch” and a challenge for you?
This project is a learning stretch and challenge for me because it will require me to have confidence to
talk to people I do not know, discuss issues that I believe, learning how to work with others in an
actual workplace, and execute radio broadcast and sports column.
6) What are your estimated costs for completing the Product, and how will you fund these costs?
The only costs for me will be travel costs to go meet with my mentors. The trip to Finland will not
cost anything, because my stepdad’s hockey team will cover all travel costs.
2. 7) Who have you chosen (or are considering choosing) as your Project Facilitator?
John Kincade (Radio Show Co-Host for Buck and Kincade on 680 The Fan)-Radio Broadcasting
Facilitator
Craig Custance (Writer for ESPN the Magazine)-Primary Sports Journalism Facilitator
Sekou Smith (NBA Columnist for NBA.com)-Secondary Sports Journalism Facilitator
Branon Michea (Sports Editor for The Cherokee Ledger News)-Secondary Sports Journalism
Facilitator
8) What is this person’s expertise in this field?
John Kincade majored in communications at Temple University. Kincade got his start in the radio
business when he moved to Atlanta in 1995 and was hired as a weekend talk show host for 680 The
Fan. He later became the host of the Atlanta Thrashers Radio Pre-Game and Post-Game shows. In
2000, Kincade became the co-host of the afternoon drive program with Buck Belue. Kincade also
serves as the primary fill-in host for Colin Cowherd on The Herd. Kincade has also substituted as host
for Mike Greenberg on Mike and Mike in the Morning, and Dan Patrick on The Dan Patrick Show. He
also has his own national program, The John Kincade Show on ESPN Radio that is heard on Sunday
mornings.
Craig Custance joined ESPN in September 2011 as an NHL reporter for ESPN the Magazine, ESPN
Insider and ESPN.com. A graduate of Michigan State University, he lived for nearly a decade in
Georgia working for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution where he spent time covering the late Atlanta
Thrashers. He was the only Thrashers beat writer to get the team to the playoffs.
Sekou Smith has covered the Atlanta Hawks for the Atlanta Journal Constitution since midway
through the 2004-05 season after covering the Indiana Pacers for the Indianapolis Star. He is a major
contributor to NBA.com.
Branon Michea is the Sports Editor for The Cherokee Leger News, so he decides what articles go into
the paper in the sports columns.
