Evaluation: In what ways
does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real
media products.
Masthead:
My magazine has several generic conventions of magazines, for
example: Masthead, coverlines, image and a puff etc.

Before creating my masthead I researched different pop genre’s
mastheads to get inspiration and in order for mine to represent
the target audiences taste and make it more professional. I
wanted to represent the targets audience tastes as then it would
appeal to them and they would be more likely to buy the
magazine. However I wanted to change it a little so it would
stand out from others magazines in the genre. I achieved this by
changing fonts and positions of certain parts. The front cover of
my magazine develops the conventions of real media products, as
it has got a masthead. A masthead is one of the most important
parts of a magazine front cover as it tells the audience which
magazine it is and what kind of information will be inside of it, it
also creates brand identity.

The masthead also connotes which genre/type of magazine it is.
So on my magazine, I have chosen to place the masthead in the
conventional place on the page, at the top, and I have chosen
fonts which would appeal to the target audience and that
connoted the brand identity and house style.
Masthead Font:
The font I got for the masthead I chose from an
online website called ‘dafont’. You get more choice
and therefore you can make it look more
professional. I think that this is a good font to have
chosen because connotes a fun and relaxed
atmosphere and this would then get the audiences
attention. The use of pink and white makes it the
masthead more interesting as it created a bit of
contrast. The pink connotes femininity, excitement
and the teenage range. The white connotes this by
connoting freshness, new information and
youthfulness. Its similar to those I researched by the
boldness and interest however a few of them were
just in a little box at the left side so this will stand
out in the shelf more.
Central Image :
I have chosen one central image like they do in real media products. It
is bold and interesting which will intrigue the audience. The model is
quite a stereotypical young woman- like the target audience.
Coverlines:
I used coverlines to give the viewers
more of an idea of the content
inside, this is also one of the generic
conventions of the real magazines. I
changed the font from the masthead to
give it more of a contrast and also
help, again, to connote the brand
          identity. However each coverlines has
the same font to help with the
consistent house style I have created.
The contents page again develops the
conventions of media products; it has
page numbers and images. The fonts I
have used for the content page flow
continuously through the front page to
the content this gives my magazine a
          professional brand identity and house
          style.
Double Page Spread:

The double page spread is quite like
the other magazines out there- there
are images on one page and a page of
text. There are more images than there
is text as this is what I found it was
like in my research. There are
highlights of colour which make it
interesting and link with the rest of the
            magazine (creates continuity).
Mise-en-scene
• The type of mise-en-scene that is in the images
throughout my magazine follows the generic,
conventional and stereotypical that I saw in other
magazines that I researched. The central image is
of a young woman and her facial expression
connotes the pop genre and it also connotes a
sense of fun and also maybe shocking. This
would then attract the young audience into
buying the magazine. The colours are bright and
interesting, this is a stereotypical part of a pop
magazines, however I have developed this. For
example in the double page spread there was a
lot of colour on the headings but the images just
had a hint of pink- this still connotes the pop
genre but it creates more of a contrast. I did this
as the focus group which I asked thought it
would be good to keep it sophisticated but still
fun and they thought you could create this by the
  hints of bright colours.

Question 1

Q one

  • 1. Evaluation: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.
  • 2. Masthead: My magazine has several generic conventions of magazines, for example: Masthead, coverlines, image and a puff etc. Before creating my masthead I researched different pop genre’s mastheads to get inspiration and in order for mine to represent the target audiences taste and make it more professional. I wanted to represent the targets audience tastes as then it would appeal to them and they would be more likely to buy the magazine. However I wanted to change it a little so it would stand out from others magazines in the genre. I achieved this by changing fonts and positions of certain parts. A masthead is one of the most important parts of a magazine front cover as it tells the audience which magazine it is and what kind of information will be inside of it, it also creates brand identity. However each coverlines has the same font to help with the consistent house style I have created. The contents page again develops the conventions of media products; it has page numbers and images. The fonts I have used for the content page flow continuously through the front page to the content this gives my magazine a professional brand identity and house style.
