This is the show where each week
we visit a productive location of
interest and today we are here at
Ravensbourne – a media college
and ‘digital destination’ just
opposite the O2 in North
Greenwich, London.
PRES 1:
Ravensbourne sports a Faculty of
Fashion and offers studies to MA
level but this afternoon we are
focusing on Communication Media
- more usually called
Broadcasting.
3. CAM 2 / And we start our walkabout in this

PAN LEFT TO INCLUDE CAMERA 1 This brand new facility is fully

FLOOR Down here the laser-flat studio
floor is no less impressive. This is
an area of 135 square metres –
and that’s a very useful size for

9. CAM 4A / The floor is, in fact, poured as a

Previously Ravensbourne
benefited from donations of
broadcast equipment from the
BBC and ITV. One example was
the BBC’s generous gift of SD
cameras but this studio is
equipped with cutting edge Sony
11. CAM 1 / HD cameras like this.
Z/O FROM DETAIL OF CAM 4
This studio’s compliment of 5 Sony

AS DIRECTED TV studio I thought you’d like to
see the fantastic view from Level 4
of the new Rave building. In fact
just down there I can see the
North Greenwich Pier which
allows visitors to arrive and depart
college by way of the fabulous
ThamesClipper service to and from
Central London. Being on the
Thames on Summer days is
blissful.

BUT inside on Level 4 you’ll find
space reserved for student-
focused support and relaxation.
As you can see the South Atrium
here at Ravensbourne offers no
end of student services and
creature comforts – free water,
soft chairs and even games tables.
This floor is also where you’ll find
the headquarters of Rave’s
fantastically hard-working
Student Union. Often you’ll find
Harri, Stuart and Sam working
hard on behalf of students in this
space – but probably not before
mid-morning if there’s been any
dressing up in women’s clothes
the night before.
(LOOKS UNSUCCESSFULLY)

Fully carpeted this Atrium is
perfectly suited to students who
need a place to chill – to reflect on
their status on Facebook, the
project brief they’ve just read 5
times and what they understand
about the phrase “blended
learning”.
In fact this area does provide the
right environment to reflect on
absolutely anything in life. Mmm.

MS PRES 1
Isn’t that clever? This facility
really is “state-of-the-Art” or
“cutting edge” – whichever
superlative tickles your fancy.
But let’s return to the studio floor
proper. I best close this door to
prevent the all-important smoke
alarms from going off.
DOES SO.
CUT ON TURN
Now, as I’ve said, this studio’s
33. CAM 3C / seamless floor allows tracking
L.S. shots like this and I thought apart
from this demonstration of good
camera technique I would use this
opportunity to show you one
almost unique facility in the
Ravensbourne TV studio.
TRACK BACK TO WINDOW AREA –
TO CAM 3D POSITION We all know that studios are great
for helping us get away from the
shooting perils of changing
daylight and unwanted noise on
location – and this properly
designed space does precisely
that. But I find that shooting all
day in a studio can make me feel
claustrophobic so I’m overjoyed to
see that the “powers that be”
decided to provide something to
alleviate my problem – a window
in the studio wall!
PULLS BACK CYCLORAMA.
Now many of you might have a
problem justifying such an

This is where students can hire

actually shoot their college

I’m not sure if we can see Gil or
Sophie manning the desk up there

have managed to have their Risk

TILT DOWN TO LEVEL 3 absolute MUST in Production these
days.
Below and to the left you can see
the end of the Post production
area. What a marvelously light
and breezy area that is. In the
Summer months I think wearing
sunglasses just might become
mandatory whether you are just
hanging out with your mates or
actually trying to sensitively edit.
