This is the show where each week
we visit a productive location of
interest and today we are here at
                                      Ravensbourne – a media college
                                      and ‘digital destination’ just

floor is no less impressive. This is
an area of 135 square metres –
and that’s a very useful size for

                                       Previously Ravensbourne
                                       benefited from donations of

BBC and ITV. One example was

soft chairs and even games tables.

This floor is also where you’ll find
                                    the headquarters of Rave’s
                                    fantastically hard-working
                                    Student Union. Often you’ll find

hard on behalf of students in this
space – but probably not before
                                    mid-morning if there’s been any

                                   Isn’t that clever? This facility
                                   really is “state-of-the-Art” or
                                   “cutting edge” – whichever
                                   superlative tickles your fancy.

But let’s return to the studio floor
proper. I best close this door to

TO CAM 3D POSITION We all know that studios are great
for helping us get away from the
                                   shooting perils of changing
                                   daylight and unwanted noise on
                                   location – and this properly
                                   designed space does precisely
that. But I find that shooting all
day in a studio can make me feel
                                   claustrophobic so I’m overjoyed to
see that the “powers that be”
                                   decided to provide something to
alleviate my problem – a window

  • 1. Camera, Lighting and Sound BOP206 / 2011 “This is the Place” 1. TITP GRAPHIC / TITLES / GRAMS PRESENTER 1: 2. CAM 3 / Hello and welcome to “This is the M.L. 2-SH Place”. PRES 2 L.O.F. PRES 1 R.O.F. PRESENTER 2: This is the show where each week we visit a productive location of interest and today we are here at Ravensbourne – a media college and ‘digital destination’ just opposite the O2 in North Greenwich, London. PRES 1: Ravensbourne sports a Faculty of Fashion and offers studies to MA level but this afternoon we are focusing on Communication Media - more usually called Broadcasting. 3. CAM 2 / And we start our walkabout in this W.S. PRESENTERS R.O.F. AT TOP the jewel of Broadcasting, the OF SHOT Ravensbourne TV studio. (TURNS) PAN LEFT TO INCLUDE CAMERA 1 This brand new facility is fully WITH PRESENTER’S WALK equipped with 5 HD cameras and is State-of-the-Art - in both the specification of its installed kit and the suitability of its building design. In fact without detailed planning 4. CAM 1 / in sound insulation for instance, STUDIO WALL DETAIL AS DIR. no studio would be able to co- exist in this an otherwise quiet 5. CAM 2 / college of study. M.S. PRES So, let’s look at the studio fundamentals. The studio’ s 6. CAM 4 / lighting ‘grid’ is way up there at W.S. STUDIO GRID/LIGHTS over 4 metres high - that’s over 13 feet and here you’ll find numerous Page 1 of 11

CAM 2 / tubes to save power and heat. W.S. PRES 1 R.O.F - FEATURE FLOOR Down here the laser-flat studio floor is no less impressive. This is an area of 135 square metres – and that’s a very useful size for MIX TO magazine and music programmes. 9. CAM 4A / The floor is, in fact, poured as a FRAME CAM 1’S PED AS HE liquid resin over a concrete base SLOWLY CRABS RIGHT and this ensures a seam-free and therefore perfectly flat floor over which cameras can move with an 10. CAM 2 / impressive ‘crab’ or ‘track’ without PRES 1 PLUS CAMERA 1 L.O.F. a bump. Previously Ravensbourne benefited from donations of broadcast equipment from the BBC and ITV. One example was the BBC’s generous gift of SD cameras but this studio is equipped with cutting edge Sony 11. CAM 1 / HD cameras like this. Z/O FROM DETAIL OF CAM 4 This studio’s compliment of 5 Sony HXC-100 cameras with superb Fujinon lenses delivers the most stunning HD picture quality you MIX TO are likely to see at 1080i. 12. CAM 3 / Not only do these cameras employ Z/I TO CAM 1’S LENS the largest CCD pickups you’ll find in ‘broadcast’ cameras but these fast – that means sensitive - Fujinon lenses deliver the sharpest of images without a hint of 13. CAM 2 / chromatic aberration. MLS CAM 1 + PRES A/B Page 2 of 11
  • 3. Camera, Lighting and Sound BOP206 / 2011 I’ll tell you more about these cameras after we’ve heard from 14. GRAPHIC / <PRES 2>. GRAMS STING PRES 2: 15. CAM 6 / Getting away from the windowless AS DIRECTED TV studio I thought you’d like to see the fantastic view from Level 4 of the new Rave building. In fact just down there I can see the North Greenwich Pier which allows visitors to arrive and depart college by way of the fabulous ThamesClipper service to and from Central London. Being on the Thames on Summer days is blissful. WALKS BUT inside on Level 4 you’ll find space reserved for student- focused support and relaxation. As you can see the South Atrium here at Ravensbourne offers no end of student services and creature comforts – free water, soft chairs and even games tables. This floor is also where you’ll find the headquarters of Rave’s fantastically hard-working Student Union. Often you’ll find Harri, Stuart and Sam working hard on behalf of students in this space – but probably not before mid-morning if there’s been any dressing up in women’s clothes the night before. (LOOKS UNSUCCESSFULLY) Page 3 of 11
  • 4. Camera, Lighting and Sound BOP206 / 2011 Fully carpeted this Atrium is perfectly suited to students who need a place to chill – to reflect on their status on Facebook, the project brief they’ve just read 5 times and what they understand about the phrase “blended learning”. In fact this area does provide the right environment to reflect on absolutely anything in life. Mmm. 16. GRAPHIC / <Pres 1> GRAMS STING PRES 1: 17. CAM 3B / Thanks <Pres 2>. ML PRES 1 + CAM 4B IN FRAME This magnificent Sony HXC-100 camera mounted on a modern Vinten pedestal really is what marks Ravensbourne out from its 18. CAM 2B / competitors. FRAME “VINTEN” LABEL ON PED BASE - SLOW Z/O TO WHOLE OF Vinten – a British company based PED in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk - are a World-leader in camera support equipment since 1945. You should not be surprised to find their kit in TV studios in every country that sports a National 19. CAM 3B / television service. A/B Just in case you didn’t realise, it is gas-powered pedestals like this that enables cameras to crane up CAMERA 4 DOES SO and down effortlessly on-shot – the sort of move which isn’t possible if your camera is mounted on a rolling tripod. These cameras are at the forefront of camera technology and were 20. CAM 1B / introduced by Sony as recently as MS CAM 4 BODY – Z/I TO TRIAX May 2009. Without the enormous CONNECTOR cost of ‘fibre’ camera cables, these Page 4 of 11

MS CAMERA HEAD SLOW Z/I TO LENS DETAIL Apart from Sony’s digital triax technology, the camera heads employ 3 x 2/3-inch Power HAD CCDs with 2.2 million pixels - and they have a vast range of automatic features useful in today’s fast production 22. CAM 3B / turnarounds. A/B This is exactly the sort of HD equipment that Broadcasters and high-end Corporate users now use now they’ve started shooting High Definition in their studios. TIGHTEN SHOT TO MS PRES 1 ON When prospective students and Q their parents visit the college for Open Day they realise that this UK college is uniquely equipped to deliver hands-on experience to the highest broadcast TV standards. 23. GRAPHIC / <Pres 2>. A/B GRAMS STING PRES 2: 24. CAM 7 / I’m now at the other end of Level AS DIRECTED 4 still in the South Atrium but close to the HelpDesks. Here we can see the lovely <name> manning the switchboard and being ready to help anyone who needs practical or spiritual support. <Name> has a special talent in that she tells me despite being 4 floors up she can still tell you who has just entered the building by the sound of their voice emanating up through the vast echoic space that is the North Page 5 of 11
  • 6. Camera, Lighting and Sound BOP206 / 2011 Atrium. How cool is that? Help is at hand too for any student who needs help with their imperative laptop. The I.T. Support Desk can assist any student who is having problems with their hardware, software or even firmware. Being connected is everything these days isn’t it? I learn so much from Facebook… WALKS Again this wonderful space is all embracing and emanates an energy - giving off a feeling of being creative when in fact you may not be. But being with your mates - discussing how much Mary drank last night for instance - just makes you feel more normal doesn’t it? At least it did for me a 25. GRAPHIC / few years ago. <Pres 1>. CAM 3C / seamless floor allows tracking L.S. shots like this and I thought apart from this demonstration of good camera technique I would use this opportunity to show you one almost unique facility in the Ravensbourne TV studio. TRACK BACK TO WINDOW AREA – TO CAM 3D POSITION We all know that studios are great for helping us get away from the shooting perils of changing daylight and unwanted noise on location – and this properly designed space does precisely that. This is where students can hire out – at no charge - the most high-end HD kit to hone their camera and sound skills or actually shoot their college projects. I’m not sure if we can see Gil or Sophie manning the desk up there but they do provide a fantastic personal service to those who have managed to have their Risk Assessments signed off. An TILT DOWN TO LEVEL 3 absolute MUST in Production these days. Below and to the left you can see the end of the Post production area. What a marvelously light and breezy area that is. In the Summer months I think wearing sunglasses just might become mandatory whether you are just hanging out with your mates or actually trying to sensitively edit. Page 8 of 11
