This document discusses the need for a more sustainable "ecological internet" as global internet usage increases. It notes that internet usage will reach 5 billion people by 2020 and addresses how to facilitate new users in an environmentally sound way. It also examines problems like privacy, addiction, and cyber threats and argues that future internet research should focus on inclusion of all people and harmonization with human society and the environment.

3. 1. Global Internet Users
2010: 2 billion Internet users(out of 7 billions)
Passed the tipping point of 25%
2020: 5 billion Internet users(out of 7.5 billions)
Most of people in the world
How do we facilitate new Internet users with
ecologically sound manner?

4. 2. Internet as Social Infrastructure
• What kinds of the social infrastructure is the Internet
being developed around the world?
• Example: Transportation
- Train: Good social infrastructure
- Car: Need to avoid USA phenomena

5. 3. Engineering Systems
• All engineering systems go through periodic major changes.
- Road
unpaved paved high speed
- Train
steam engine electric engine high speed
- Phone
manual automatic mobile smart
- Television
black & white color high definition
• Is it time for the Internet to go through the major change?
- Future Internet research efforts are challenging now.

6. 4. Future Internet Research
• Long term research on fundamental issues
• Future Internet research started in 2000s around the world
2005~ USA/NSF
2006~ EU/FP
2004~ China/CNGI
2007~ Japan/NWNG

- Standardization Organizations(IETF, ITU, ISO,...)
- Internet Governance Forum
• What Internet governance model are we looking for?

16. 8. Ecological Internet
- Toward Sustainable Internet
• It may be time to think of the long term perspective of
the Internet as critical global social infrastructure.
• Future Internet research & development shall address
- for all people in the world, not just current users(First
Billions), and
- harmonization with the human society and the global
environment
16
17. 8.Ecological Internet
- Toward Sustainable Internet(continued)
We may call the emerging global social infrastructure based on
the Internet as
- Sustainable Internet: The Internet we can sustain and
we want to sustain,
- Humane Internet: The human-centered Internet, which
is harmonized with the human society,
and/or
- Ecological Internet: The Internet governance based on
consensus like ecological democracy
17
18. 9. Remark
• It is only the beginning of the Internet revolution now.
• Where are we heading?
• Are we making the mistakes of other global
infrastructures such as automobile and nuclear
technology among others?
• Are we having good global coordination now?
• Open data and sources are changing the world.
