The 5G-RANGE project aims to provide broadband internet access to remote and rural areas using unused TV white space spectrum in an economically viable way. The project involves developing a new 5G access network architecture that uses cooperative spectrum sensing to identify unused TV channels and allows 5G signals from a base station to opportunistically transmit in the vacant channels. The project has 10 partners and will run for 30 months, developing a proof-of-concept using software-defined radios to demonstrate the new cognitive MAC layer and dynamic spectrum access capabilities.
