This document discusses the use of satellites and fiber optic networks to deliver broadband internet globally. It notes that while fiber optic networks have limitations for reaching remote populations, communication satellites are able to deliver broadband internet via geostationary satellites and emerging high throughput satellites (HTS) using multiple spot beams. HTS provide over 10 times the capacity of traditional satellites and are able to deliver broadband internet to populations that fiber optic networks cannot reach, including over seas and to areas with low population densities. The document promotes the use of both fiber optic networks and communication satellite technologies as complementary methods to provide global broadband connectivity.
