A Sting in the Tale!
On the face of it, today’s Gospel is a parable about perseverance: if even a corrupt
judge will give in to persistent ‘pestering’, how much more will God answer our
prayers when we pray continually? We can only imagine the help God makes
available to those who ask him. Don’t lose heart, Jesus tells us. Your prayers will be
answered.
But there is a sting in the tail, and Jesus also has a challenge for his followers. Almost
as an after-thought he poses a question: ‘But when the Son of Man comes, will he find
any faith on earth?’ The real question is not whether our prayer can move God. Jesus
turns this question on its head and asks instead: can our prayer move us?
Does our faith spur us into action? The widow in the parable is seeking justice, and
she refuses to stop fighting until it is granted. We cannot ask God for what we want or
need, and then sit back and expect it to happen. That is not faith. Our prayer life goes
hand in hand with our willingness to fight for what is right, to live as Jesus asks us to.
We are part of the process

Our Parish Calendar – This month’s theme: St Teresa of Avila
Majestic sovereign, timeless wisdom,
You kindness melts my hard, cold soul.
Handsome lover, selfless giver,
Your beauty fills my dull, sad eyes.
I am yours, you made me.
I am yours, you called me.
I am yours, you saved me.
I am yours, you loved me.
I will never leave your presence.
Give me death, give me life.
Give me sickness, give me health.
Give me honour, give me shame.
Give me weakness, give me strength.
I will have whatever you give. Amen.
(St Teresa of Avila – Reformer of the Carmelite Order)

Bereaved
We remember in our prayers the recent passing of Nancy Finnerty, Pearse Road, and
mother of Catherine McMorrow. We pray for Nancy’s soul and we ask God to
comfort the bereaved.

Sunday 20th Oct 2013 – Mission Sunday – What does Pope Francis say?
Faith is God's precious gift, which opens our mind to know and love him. He wants to
enter into relationship with us and allow us to participate in his own life in order to make
our life more meaningful, better and more beautiful. God loves us! Faith, however,
needs to be accepted, which means, it needs our personal response, the courage to
entrust ourselves to God, to live his love and be grateful for his infinite mercy. It is a gift,
not reserved for a few but offered with generosity. [...] The proclamation of the Gospel is
part of being disciples of Christ and it is a constant commitment that animates the whole
life of the Church. "The missionary outreach is a clear sign of the maturity of an
ecclesial community" (BENEDICT XVI, Verbum Domini, 95). Each community is
"mature" when it professes faith, celebrates it with joy during the liturgy, lives charity,
proclaims the Word of God endlessly, leaves ones own to take it to the "suburbs",
especially to those who have not yet had the opportunity to know Christ. The strength of
our faith, at a personal and community level, can be measured by the ability to
communicate it to others, to spread and live it in charity, to witness it to those we meet
and share the path of life with us.

  • 2. On the face of it, today’s Gospel is a parable about perseverance: if even a corrupt judge will give in to persistent ‘pestering’, how much more will God answer our prayers when we pray continually? We can only imagine the help God makes available to those who ask him. Don’t lose heart, Jesus tells us. Your prayers will be answered. But there is a sting in the tail, and Jesus also has a challenge for his followers. Almost as an after-thought he poses a question: ‘But when the Son of Man comes, will he find any faith on earth?’ The real question is not whether our prayer can move God. Jesus turns this question on its head and asks instead: can our prayer move us? Does our faith spur us into action? The widow in the parable is seeking justice, and she refuses to stop fighting until it is granted. We cannot ask God for what we want or need, and then sit back and expect it to happen. That is not faith. Our prayer life goes hand in hand with our willingness to fight for what is right, to live as Jesus asks us to. We are part of the process Recent Weddings Congratulation to Brendan Mahon & Emer Kearns and to Joseph Fitzgerald & Aisling Kelly who were recently married in our Church. We wish them well in their futures together. Community Alert Meeting There will be a Community Alert Meeting held on Monday 21st Oct at 9:00pm in Carraroe Community Centre. Our Parish Calendar – This month’s theme: St Teresa of Avila Majestic sovereign, timeless wisdom, You kindness melts my hard, cold soul. Handsome lover, selfless giver, Your beauty fills my dull, sad eyes. Amen. (St Teresa of Avila – Reformer of the Carmelite Order) Bereaved We remember in our prayers the recent passing of Nancy Finnerty, Pearse Road, and mother of Catherine McMorrow. We pray for Nancy’s soul and we ask God to comfort the bereaved. Sunday 20th Oct 2013 – Mission Sunday – What does Pope Francis say? Faith is God's precious gift, which opens our mind to know and love him. He wants to enter into relationship with us and allow us to participate in his own life in order to make our life more meaningful, better and more beautiful. God loves us! Faith, however, needs to be accepted, which means, it needs our personal response, the courage to entrust ourselves to God, to live his love and be grateful for his infinite mercy. It is a gift, not reserved for a few but offered with generosity. [...] The proclamation of the Gospel is part of being disciples of Christ and it is a constant commitment that animates the whole life of the Church. "The missionary outreach is a clear sign of the maturity of an ecclesial community" (BENEDICT XVI, Verbum Domini, 95). Each community is "mature" when it professes faith, celebrates it with joy during the liturgy, lives charity, proclaims the Word of God endlessly, leaves ones own to take it to the "suburbs", especially to those who have not yet had the opportunity to know Christ. The strength of our faith, at a personal and community level, can be measured by the ability to communicate it to others, to spread and live it in charity, to witness it to those we meet and share the path of life with us.
