3. This music video is completely subjective and has no clear message but by selecting a variation
of theories and models you can take away some of what the artists intended. I don’t think the Effects
Model applies here because the video is so subjective and doesn’t really have a key theme so the
audience doesn’t collectively submit to an ideology. This is where the gratification model comes into
play because the audience has complete control over what they take away. For example I think this
video portrays a very dark theme and has themes relating to sexuality and being alone. From Andrew
Goodwin we can take that there is a link between the lyrics and visuals in this video. It may not be
direct by the dark theme of the lyrics connect with the dark theme of the visuals. However what we
cant take from Andrew Goodwin is that the label makes sure there is running motif between there
music videos. Blink-182 have been lucky enough to have creative freedom with the music that they
make along with videos. Carol Vernallis said that editing in music videos is more rhythmic than in films
which you can identify in this video as there is a lot of fades blending the video which matches the
flow of the lyrics as well. From Firth in 1988 and his three categories of music videos I think this one
falls into the conceptual because of the fact that there is no clear message and it is strung together
metaphors in one video.
