1. Yr13 Help with essay structure
What aspects of a film determine its genre? Refer to at least 2 films
Just because it says refer to at least 2 films that does not mean refer to just 2 films;
you should try to refer to more than 2 films. So first of all before you try to answer an
exam question you need to write a plan, a mini structure, or it may not even be
structure but a list of things that you need to cover to successfully answer the
question.
So my plan was:
I need to cover the key concepts LIAR 1. Media Languages
Need to discuss genre conventions in relation to key concepts 2. Institution
Discuss 1 with reference to genre conventions so how my 3. Audience
case studies all utilise similar elements iconography, setting, 4. Representation
characters, lighting, camerawork, sound and theme but don’t
discuss case studies systematically but the conventions
Define genre – how is genre defined? Introduction e.g. through it’s conventions,
which are the rules, the blueprint, used by industry, recognised by audience
Reference case studies that fit genre safely/ consistently SCREAM, CREEP,
PSYCHO, and HALLOWEEN my examples for genre conventions
Problematise genre can all films fit a clear definition of genre? SAW, (SCREAM)
Mixing conventions creates hybrids bring in the problems of genre theory if all films
were the same defining genre would be easy typical genres evolve over time and the
way the audience respond to genre films also changes therefore there is a need to
constantly redefine genre the blueprint can change leading to a conclusion
So how would I implement this plan?
