1. Next half term
• Most of you will need to produce your research project.
• All of you will be working on your evaluation and director’s
commentary.
• Independent study/homework should cover the research component
and the improvements to existing blog research posts, leaving lesson
time for evaluations (and some writing up of research projects).
• Exam preparation will commence after Easter, though feel free to ask
for practice tasks and research questions as you complete the
coursework (give me some warning!).
2. Research project
The English and Media chief examiner wrote:
• The brief is for a “promotional package” and the research might reflect on how
different parts of the industry might use this promotional package. So a ‘major’ might
promote in a different way to an ‘independent’. The relationship between majors and
independents might be explored. Whether an artist needs to be signed at all, whether
having a video on YouTube/Facebook might be more important could be explored as
well as the amount of money being made from live performances as opposed to
recorded music. Which department might ’sign’ the artist, which department might be
promoting them having signed the new artist could be explored as well.
• Not all these questions need to be answered but these questions can have some impact
onto the form and style of the video.
• It could be said that “a little bit on institution can go a long way” but it is definitely good
to have as it should have an impact on the style and form in some way.
• A key point for me is that the research does not have to come in essay form. Screen
grabs of You Tube (hit numbers and comments) can say a lot. Mood/flow charts
(Pinterest/ Timetoast) can also work. A video or even Slideshare can work – although the
last option often ends up being essay like.
