1. Mini Redesign Project

Description: My client is Mrs. Ngo, a Geometry teacher at Saluda High School. My
son is in her class, and I often see his Geometry PowerPoint slides when he prints
them off at home. When I read this redesign assignment, I knew I had to ask Mrs.
Ngo to become my client.
Justification: Mrs. Ngo’s PowerPoint slides do lack an educational appeal. They did
not have consistency and did not engage the learner. I also recognized that the
slides did not foster multiple intelligences. Unfortunately, Geometry is a tough
subject for many of the students, and not having effective visuals, videos, and
interactive approaches created a larger gap for understanding.
I approached the redesign using the various resources from Module 2. “Cheating
Death by Powerpoint” served as my main resource. I also the ten tips and the
graphics and design tips from Module 2.
2. Below are screen shots from the original and restructured slides. I have provided a
rationale for each change.
1. Use color wisely: I changed the blended background to a solid, light purple. I also
changed the black type to white to create a better color contrast.
2. Include clear learning objective: As in any lesson, a teacher needs to state clear,
concrete learning objectives for students.
(See slides in #1)
3. Reduce number of words: You do not want to clutter your presentation with too
many bullets, so I created an animation to isolate each bulleted sentence. This
would force the students to pay attention to each point as the teacher lectures.
3. 4. Add animation to create a visual to reinforce the lesson and to tap into the
students’ cognitive memory????
4. 5. Add interactive components: The students need to have multiple ways to learn
the material.
6. Add video components: The teacher needs to present the ideas in various modes
to tap into multiple intelligences.
