3. Species : Asparagus racemosus
Family : asparagaceae
Uses : Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari) is recommended
in Ayurvedic texts for the prevention and treatment of gast
ric ulcers and dyspepsia,and as a galactogogue. A. racem
osus has also been used by some Ayurvedic practitioners
for nervous disorders.
Chemical constituent:Two new steroidal saponins, shatava
roside A and shatavaroside B together with a known sapon
in,filiasparoside C,were isolated from the roots of Asparagus
racemosus.
Five steroidal saponins,shatavarins VI-X,together with five
known saponins,shatavarin I (or asparoside B),shatavarin
IV (or asparinin B),shatavarin V,immunoside and schidiger
asaponin D5 (or asparanin A), have been isolated from the
roots of Asparagus racemosus.Also known is the isoflavone
8-methoxy-5,6,4'-trihydroxyisoflavone 7-O-beta-D-glucopy
ranoside.

Chemical constituent :The leaves of Adhatoda vasica
contains phytochemicals such as
alkaloids,tannins,saponins,phenolics and flavonoids.

5. species:Ocimum tenuiflorum, also known as Ocimum
sanctum,holy basil,or tulasi (also spelled thulasi),is an aromatic
plant in the family Lamiaceae which is native to the Indian
subcontinent and widespread as a cultivated plant throughout
the Southeast Asian tropics.

uses:It acts as a detoxifying,cleansing and purifying agent
both from within and without.
.It is also effective in treating skin disorders, itching and
issues like ringworms.
.It helps in relieving from fever, headache, sore throat, cold,
cough, flu and chest congestion.
.Helps relieve stress, strengthen immunity, and facilitate
proper digestion.
.It is loaded with phytonutrients, essential oils, Vitamin.
Chemical constituent:The chemical composition of the essential
oil of flowering aerial parts of Ocimum tenuiflorum L. growing
in the North West Karnataka, India, was investigated.
The hydro-distilled essential oil was analyzed by gas
chromatography equipped with flame ionization detector
(GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry
(GC/MS). Results demonstrated that the oil was found to be
rich in phenyl derivative compounds (83.8%). The major
compound was identified as methyl eugenol (82.9%) among
twenty-six compounds, comprising 98.9% of the total oil.

6. KARDAL
Synonym: Canna indica
Biological source:Plant species of the Canna genus,belonging to the
family Cannaceae,
Chemical constituents: Rootstock contains various enzymes,
triacontanol Betulinic acid,.
Oleonolic acid and Traraxer-14-en-3-one.
Uses: The plant is used in the treatment of women's complaints.
A decoction of the root with fermented rice is used in the treatment of
gonorrhoea
and amenorrhoea.
The plant is also considered to be demulcent, diaphoretic and
diuretic.
A fibre obtained from the leaves is used for making paper.
Smoke from the burning leaves is said to be insecticidal. 05

Synonym: -Helianthus annuus
Biological source:- Belongs to the family of Astera-
ceae or Compositae
Chemical constituents: Palmetic acid(5%),stearic
acid(6%),oleic acid(30%),linoleic acid(59%),proteins
(14-19%),soluble sugar(7-9%)
The Stem part also contains phosphorous & potassium.
Uses: The greatest medicinal use of sunflower that
has been used throughoutthe world is for pulmonary
afflictions.
Used in industry for paints & cosmetics.
The dried stem is also been used as fuel.
The fibre from the stem is used for paper.

Uses of palm .Rattans, whose stems are used extensively

reaching a height of 8 meters. Leaves are leathery,

Biological source:Aconitum anthora, is a yellow flowering
plant species of the genus Aconitum in the family Ranunculaceae.

Biological Source: Spathiphyllum is a genus of
about 40 species of monocotyledonous flowering
plants in the family Araceae.
Uses:The Peace Lily excels in the removal of alcohols,
acetone,trichloroethylene,benzene and formaldehyde.
Its ability to remove air pollutants and its excellent
performance in all categories make it a most valuable
houseplant.

Latin name : Cantharanthus roseus, formerly Vinca rosea
or Lochnera rosea.
Indian names : Sadabahar, Sadapushpi, Sadaphuli, Bar-
amasi etc.
Common names: Periwinkle,Vinca,Rosy periwinkle,Mad-
agascar periwinkle,Cape periwinkle, Old maid, etc.
Biological source:It is obtained from the entire plant of
Catharanthus roseus belonging to family Apocynaceae.
Chemical constituents: Active constituents are Vincistri-
ne,Vinblastine.The plant produces about 130 of these co-
mpounds.
Uses:Vinca is used as anticancer (treatment of Hodgkin’s
disease and leukemia).The leaves are used to control di-
abetes and high blood pressure.The alkaloids alsooffer
sedative and tranquilizing properties.It relieves muscle
pain and depression.

17. CESTRUM NOCTURNUM
Synonym:night-blooming jasmine,night-blooming cestrum,
lady of the night,queen of the night,night-bloomi-ng jessam-
ine.
Biological source:It is a species of Cestrum in the plant
family Solanaceae (the potato family). It is native to the
West Indies,but naturalized in South Asia.
Chemical constituents: Little is known about the chemical
composition of C.nocturnum.The sapogenin steroids tigo-
genine, smilagenine and yuccagenine have been found in
the leaves.The leaves also contain traces of nicotine.The
composition of the amazing scent of the plant is not well
understood,but many find that simply inhaling the perfume
deeply is enough to inducapsychoactive state.The berries
and the leaves are said to induce hallucinations when con-
sumed.C. nocturnum may cause poisoning in both humans
and animals.
Uses: Antipyretic, Anti-inflammatory, Antibacterial, Antioxid-
ant, Antitumour, Diuretic. Plant extracts have shown larvici-
dal activity against the mosquito Aedes aegypti while showi-
ng no toxicity to fish. Plant extracts cause Hematological
changes in the freshwater fish when exposed to sub lethal
concentration of this plant.

Synonym: Butterfly Ginger Lily, White Ginger Lily, Garland Flower,
Botanical name: Hedychium coronarium
Family: Zingiberaceae (Ginger family)
Genus: Hedychium
Species: H. coronarium
Chemical constituent:Dried rhizome contains: starch, 3 %; glucose,
4.58 %; albumen, 1.65 %; fats, 0.33%; resinous acid, 3.6%; resinous
acid,3.66%,resin,5.93 %;extractive matter, 0.91%;essential oil,13.75%
organic acids, 5.5%; cellulose, 29.68%.
The flower yields a fragrant essential oil; the rhizome, a volatile oil.
Study on rhizomes yielded coronarin -D, coronarin -D ethyl ether,
coronarin -E, and a new diterpene identified as (+)-14β-hydroxylabda-
8(17),12-dieno-16,15-lactone, assigned the trivial name of isocoronari-
n-D. Several labdane-type diterpenes–coronarin A, B, C, D, E, and F
have been isolated from the rhizome.
Uses: H. coronarium is mainly used for ornamental purposes, in gard-
ens and as cut flowers.The fragrant flowers are used extensively in
garlands (or leis) in India, Japan and Hawaii.
It is used to make perfumes.
The rhizomes are edible and have been used for starch extraction.
