The Indian national emblem is displayed on official documents and was adopted on January 26, 1950. It features four lions resting on a circular base, representing power and confidence, and surrounded by animals symbolizing the four directions. Below the lions is the national motto "Satyameva Jayate" meaning "Truth alone triumphs", inscribed on the abacus. The design is based on the famous Lion Capital of Ashoka that can be seen in the Archaeological Museum in Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh.
