5. DEVELOPMENT OF UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGY IN CROATIA
THE 60’s
• systematic research started in the 60's as a reaction of the local museum on continuous theft of underwater archaeological material
• action groups formed in Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, Šibenik, Split and Dubrovnik were the core research units THE 70’s
•action groups were started to be coordinated from the head office in Zagreb THE 80’s
• Zagreb head office and archaeological museum in Zadar are the only institutions that continued the work of action groups
• directorate for the protection of the cultural heritage formed a special department for underwater archeology 2004.
•department moved to Croatian Restoration Institute and continues to actively promote protection and research of underwater cultural heritage
