It is a privilege to present our annual report to you. We have had another incredible year of
Change Agent Magic - contributing our special puzzle piece to crime prevention and
diversion in our beautiful South Africa.
It moves my soul to experience how those we journey with allow themselves the experience of
awakening to more of themselves and a deeper sense of purpose. I often say to our students:
Do not underestimate the ripple of your awakening
We experience its heartwarming impact on how we live and (un)learn together. A living and
(un)learning that is authentic and kind… that is generous… that is honest and
transparent… that stretches and encourages… that heals our wounds and edits our
old stories. It is a living and (un)learning that allows the student their own unique path… also
the tough patches! There is nothing more liberating than walking the plank of a perception!
Come with me. Experience the unique unfolding of a Change Agent Journey. Students
awakening to their inner coach, healer and guide and ﬁring up their entrepreneurial spirit
all while assisting and guiding others to do the same.

We have enjoyed another amazing year of learning, guidance and adventure. I am very proud of
our achievements and our growth. With amazing cooking art, music, fruit & veg, book keeping and
painting there are so many windows of opportunities in our new projects. It makes me as a Change
Agent and Project Manager really enthusiastic about our new year.
What stands out signiﬁcantly for me is the commitment of each student involved in our projects;
they have brought a special ingredient every single day. Phumzile has taken his cooking art to the
next level and in collaboration with RUC cooked up a storm at a recent event; in our CMD music
project we have experienced Bryan, Paul, Retro and Lucian working in collaboration on a demo
album; Fabio has in parolee support felt inspired to start a small Fruit & Veg entrepreneurial
business; Monwabisi has blessed his community with bookkeeping classes; in our Prison Process
we have had 60 highly dedicated students active in our process. These are just some of the
amazing highlights though our past year. All waiting for you in this report.
I am excited about what lies ahead - especially with our upcoming project house with a brand new
production studio and radio on the horizon; a kitchen fully equipped for our food project and a
stunning ofﬁce space to accommodate more of our Change Agent Projects.
To you dear reader, to my fellow Change Agents in the making, to our dedicated participants, our
valued sponsors and our volunteers I am sending much love and huge appreciation for making the
year so special and adding such tremendous value to our journey. We appreciate your special

OUR VISION
IN ACTION…
1. We facilitate CIRCLES OF CHANGE (COC) in highly challenged South African
communities establishing a foundation for development with our personal values-based
leadership program: THE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL (TRI).
2. We educate CHANGE AGENTS who facilitate dynamic COC processes within their
communities which include: prisons, families, schools, youth at risk, businesses and
organisations – in society at large.
3. Our CHANGE AGENTS are ROLE MODELS who also assist the important phase of Re-
Integration, reducing the recidivism rate by helping parolees to build the bridge back into
society, back home into their families and communities.
4. We are an EMPOWERMENT ARM for our beneficiaries, their families and
communities. We do not do it for them. We do it with them. ”Give a man a fish and you feed
him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” The COC empowers the
journey of each student towards sustainable livelihood, operating in an Abundant
Exchange.
5. We strongly believe in SUSTAINABILITY and that everything brought to a community
must be able to stay and be nurtured within the community for continuous learning and
growth.

We have brought TRI to 3 Western Cape Prisons in 2015/16:
Malmesbury Prison (32) 
Helderstroom Prison (8) 
Worcester Prison (20)
 
5 of our 7 Facilitators initially met SmilingOne inside prison while incarcerated and are trained as
Responsibility Coaches in our COC College.
3 of the 5 facilitators are today successfully re-integrated and earn an income by facilitating
and being an example of TRI - inside/out prison.
2 of the 5 facilitators are still incarcerated and guiding their fellow inmates through TRI not
just in sessions but also through being an example of the TRI lifestyle in their living
environment
 
Our 7 Facilitators have in the 3 prisons had 60 inmates in session in Phase 1.
15 of the 60 have qualiﬁed to move into Phase 2 
4 of the 15 have qualiﬁed to move into Phase 3 and are in training as Facilitators

(COC COLLEGE 6+ YEARS)
My process with the clients/peers over this period has been all about commitment, trust,
interaction and continuous support.
One of our sessions on The Observer assisted us to look deeper into our Purpose, our Identity and
Direction. It has been a time of deeply thoughtful processes, a chance for all of us to implement
our tools: to observe, to take ownership of our reactions, to express anger and fear in a non
confrontational way and to give space for new development.
In session we have learnt to own our feelings, to feel them, to name them and to tell them. The
peers have also assisted me to reﬂect and learn so much more than just ‘the theory’. Some of the
peers responses were: “I observe my words and my actions… I own the hurtful words and actions
that I do to others… I now learn about things I do when I am stressed and feeling threatened… I
stop hurting people with my words and my actions coz I don’t want them to do it to me… I am
doing to others what was done to me by my Dad when I was a child…
It has been amazing to see how purposeful each session is, how the peers handle conﬂict and the
trust there is between us. It is inspiring to be part of their lives, allowing them and myself to
develop, to learn and grow and to love in our own pace and understanding.
I have related to the peers in meaningful ways to ensure that as they develop they can proudly say
“I did that myself”.

“Life is like the sea. Sometimes it is up, sometimes it is down. It is time to think
about past happenings. Where we lost track. Now is a chance to look into it. I met
someone who did not want to look back into the past. I said to him: if you want to
make sure you are on track make the change - you have to go back to see who you
were back then, not to do the same as you did back then. We go back to rectify.
Many don’t want to look back. But we must remember that we learn from the past.
Our past is our teacher.”

Objective 2016/17: We offer our Services in 5 Western Cape Prisons
We continue to offer our services at Malmesbury and Worcester Prisons. We fundraise and
continue our services at Helderstroom Prison and open two more prison processes 1) Brandvlei
Juvenile Centre and 2) Pollsmoor Prison. We value our partnership with DCS.
We welcome 100 committed inmates to train in our SmilingOne COC College.
The evidence of COC Education is to be found in 1) how each Student lives into the learning and
becomes an example - a Role Model - of it every single day and 2) how each Student passes on
the learning to his/her family and community.

PAROLEE & FAMILY SUPPORT
The path of Re-Integration asks of commitment and discipline to live into personal values-based
leadership. It is particularly challenging upon release from a Correctional Centre. Support is KEY.
We offer Parolee & Family Support for our Students and have in 2015/16 assisted 9 parolees/
ex-parolees as they have continued their TRI/COC studies with SmilingOne.
As part of their COC Education each student has:
1) deepened their ‘Sharing’ Practice and were offered weekly TRI sessions
2) explored and invested in their ‘Caring’ Practices and contributed to 7 Community Projects: our
Prisons Project, Phumzile’s Khayelitsha Project, Franklin’s CMD Project, Fabio’s Belhar Project,
Malcolm’s Car Project, Monwabisi’s Bookkeeping Project and Welcome’s Solace Project
3) explored their ‘I am a Resource’ Entrepreneurial Practice and have been inspired to ﬁnd further
study and job opportunity. We have through sponsorships offered 3 of the 9 Parolees income
directly via SmilingOne. 5 of the 9 parolees have attended the Responsibility Coach Education
offered by SmilingOne. 1 of the 9 parolees have made accounting his career and teaches
others.
Objective 2016/17: We offer 12 parolees & their families support as well as 5 parolees/ex-
parolees income directly via SmilingOne as part of their ‘I am a Resource’ Entrepreneurial Practice.

PHUMZILE SALELA
Khayelitsha Project

A truly special path of reintegration! We at SmilingOne feel fortunate to both witness and be
part of Phumzile’s COC journey - he has from the moment he stepped outside the correctional
centre on November 10th 2015 amazed us with his incredible heart. He moves with poetry in his
soul and it is the greatest privilege to journey alongside him.
Phumzile has trained with SmilingOne since 2012 and started his Responsibility Coach
Educational Training in 2014 in Worcester Prison - fully activated in his COC.
We involved Phumzile in daily activities in the ﬁrst 3 months of his Day Parole from Pollsmoor
Prison. He was given transport money to be able to travel to the projects. He joined Franklin in
the CMD Community Project in Elsies River Wednesdays and in Fabio’s project in Belhar on
Tuesdays. He also spend valuable time with his family in Khayelitsha, building the bridge back
home into his family.
Phumzile set up a TRI facilitation space in his home where he weekly (Thursdays) hosted 14
community members for sessions. Shortly thereafter he added the Zola Business School to his
outreach portfolio, facilitating weekly TRI for a class of 18 children and offering drama &
poetry classes on Fridays. Once a week he dedicated his time to his inner TRI journey in session
with Franklin. Bi-weekly he attended his coach educational training with Karina.
SOULFUL - VISIONAIRY - DEDICATED - POET - SELF MOTIVATED
Objective 2016/17: we continue to support Phumzile in his re-integration journey - a COC in full
blossoming. This includes an entrepreneurial food adventure, poetry and drama adventure and
continued sharpening of the TRI Facilitator Toolbox. It is Phumzile’s objective to be a role model
for more than 50 youth, women and men in his community.

It has been an exciting
journey to walk hand in
hand with Fabio who did his
TRI1+2 in Goodwood Prison
from 2011-13. He reunited
with us in 2015. Franklin has
visited Fabio weekly in
Belhar and together they
have been working towards
Fabio’s full COC activation.
Our objective is to assist
Fabio in unlocking his full
potential.

Monwabisi re-integrated in 2014 after training with SmilingOne inside Malmesbury Prison for
two full years. He jumped right into building his own little business and offered ballroom
dancing to the youth in Langa - all while in parolee support attending weekly TRI sessions. A
fantastic learning curve for an inspired and hungry entrepreneurial mind. Throughout 2015
Monwabisi committed his full schedule to his accounting studies. He has offered manual book
keeping classes as a free service to 3 of his fellow community members and also earns an
income offering his skill.
Our objective is to continue to assist Monwabisi in his full COC Activation. He has a space in our
Project House in Wynberg where he can offer the Bookkeeping classes to the community.

Bookkeeping Project

August - December 2015 we gave Malcolm an
opportunity to explore his passion for cars
further. We bought an old BMW 318 for the
project which assisted Malcolm and Franklin in
driving to all prison projects to facilitate TRI.
The income generating COC activity supported
Malcolm and his little family. Malcolm attended
weekly TRI sessions with Franklin.
We are deeply grateful to have been a puzzle
piece in Malcolm’s journey. Each moment
offers such great learning. Our objective is to
continue to offer Malcolm a platform for TRI
Guidance and COC Education.

A Change Agent Extraordinaire with a solid commitment to his
journey. It started in 2009 in Brandvlei Maximum Prison - Franklin is
now 6.5 years into his SmilingOne Journey.
- he has been a key role player in building the SmilingOne
Foundation Parolee Support Portfolio as showcased earlier in our
annual report. He is a truly special example, fully reintegrated and
rehabilitated and has journeyed with our beneﬁciaries with
incredible care and soulful attention
- he has served on our board of trustees (his 2nd year) and has
headed up the Change Agent Committee (his 2nd year)
- he project managed the COC activations of each Parolee attending
COC Education and expanded on his skill of supervision of TRI
processes of Change Agents in the Making inside prison
- he attended and deepened himself in his personal TRI & COC
educational sessions consistently - fully aware that it starts with him
- at the same time he continued to build on his COC2 Caring Project

- through sponsorships we setup our new production studio and licensed radio in our project
house in Wynberg
- we welcome 20 youth in the CMD project to explore their talent and unlock potential

- the studio becomes a fundraising engine as well for sustainability of the project - we raise
funds through availing the studio to artists for recording purposes

WELCOME DENNIS WITBOOI
THE SOLACE NETWORK
It is great pleasure to witness and support the journey of
Welcome who started his TRI sessions back in Brandvlei
Maximum Prison in 2008 - he was one of our ﬁrst eight. Since re-
integrating he has blessed his community with his vision of
soulful education. He is a true master in networking and weaves
many inspiring threads into a shared change approach which in
2015/16 has beneﬁted hundreds of students in the Hout Bay
Area. We continue to support Welcome in 2016/17.

YOUTH SUPPORT |
EDUCATION
Bukiwe has been with SmilingOne
since 2011 and is now in her 3rd year of
a Business Management Degree at the
College of Cape Town, Gugulethu
Campus. Bukiwe receives a monthly
Stipend from SmilingOne. We were
able to gift her with a laptop to attend
efﬁciently to her studies in 2016. In our
new project year Bukiwe is supported
with a monthly stipend and has access
to COC education.
Elsie has been active in her TRI studies throughout
2015 in weekly sessions with Franklin. In the
unlocking of her potential she discovered her
passion for people and started an educational path
towards becoming a nurse. Alongside her studies
Elsie earned an income via SmilingOne as our
cleaning angel, keeping our workshop and ofﬁce
space clean. This allowed her to invest more in
herself and also to support her daughter Thembi on
her educational journey.

COMMUNITY, WOMEN &
YOUTH SUPPORT |
EDUCATION
Vuyiswa and Ma Esther are two incredible women from Nyanga East whom we have worked
closely with since 2010. They and the 140 children in their care have benefited from our
renovation and upgrade of the Educare Centre in 2014, continuous TRI/COC training for the staff
as well as monthly stipends. In 2015 the objective was to move towards leadership sustainability
for the Ivy Nyovane Educare Centre - all five key points in our 'Vision in Action' activated. In
monthly TRI sessions with Franklin they have fine-tuned their toolboxes and from 2016 they are
steering their own ship. What a truly special example you are Vuyiswa and Ma Esther!

LIVE REPORTS: Transparency is of utmost
importance to us. We have enjoyed to keep
our sponsors updated and perform LIVE
reports - here one of our LIVE reports at
RUC where Franklin and Nathalie are
sharing our newest song VOICES, a product
from the CMD project. The congregation
yearly donates funds towards our Change
Agent Portfolio. This helps us cover a
portion of Franklin’s activation in TRI session
inside/out prison.
FUNDRAISING EVENT: The Cape Town
Cycle Tour is one of our platforms to
network and invite people and companies
to ride with SmilingOne. Our preparations
started in August 2015. We enjoyed
meeting our riders at a Meet n Greet prior
to the big event. We had 15 riders.

MOTIVATIONAL TALK: Franklin joined
Phumzile at the Zola Business school to
share of experiences with gangsterism and
drugs. 17 youth are deeply concentrated
and absorbing the inspiration shared.

were invited to speak at the Learning &
Development Community of Practice in SA -
sharing of the Journey of The Responsible
Individual - lives impacted as we begin to
open ourselves in authentic expression.
WORKSHOP: Our team of Responsibility
Coaches & Change Agents in training are
offered bi-weekly coach educational
sessions and workshops. Here we are
deepening ourselves in the Personal
Balanced Proﬁle - a Workshop based on
case studies.

CHANGE AGENT DOCUMENTARY:
Roxanne Dalton has in 2015/16 continued
to shoot footage for her documentary based
on the Change Agent Journey’s of Franklin
and Malcolm. The documentary is part of
her Masters Degree in Documentary Arts at
the University of Cape Town. We are all
looking forward to the viewing in 2016 - to
experience her lens on the Change Agent
Journey.
DANES IN SOUTH AFRICA: The Danish
Television Station DR2 (a public service
broadcasting company) followed Karina for
a day and experienced her SmilingOne
Change Agent work here in South Africa
and aired it several times in Denmark. It has
been incredibly well received and inspired
us to invest more time into our International
Volunteer Program.

Nickolaj Johansson visited us from Denmark
and spend 4 weeks fully emerged into our
Change Agent Projects, enjoying an intimate
close-up experience of our day to day
operations as well as our COC educational
approach. It was a fantastic learning curve
for all of us.
Objective 2016/17: We host 5 international
volunteers yearly who stay at our Project
House and follow one or more of our
Change Agents over a period of 4-6 weeks.
Each package is tailored to the volunteer
and the funding (paid by the volunteer)
goes in full towards our projects.

Investment in the Change Agent is a
key focus in COC Education. The
moment we experience the buy-in from
the Change Agent into their full COC
Activation we take it to the next level - this
means an activation of funds into their
caring project in service to their
community as well as funding into their
entrepreneurial income generating TRI
activities for sustainable livelihood.
We went from 26% allocation in the
previous year to 55% this year with the
help of our treasured sponsors LRMG
Performance Agency, D. Thorpe,
RUC and A. Bava. We deeply value our
longterm partnerships and their
continuous support & buy-in to our
change approach.
We experience many NPOs struggling
with the donor landscape in South
Africa - agreed it is a challenging one. Yet
in accepting the challenge we use it as
our classroom. We are inspired to

create products within each of our projects within the next couple of years
(music, productions, food, volunteer experiences) which over time can cover a
large portion of our foundation’s budget. Imagine an in-house fundraising
engine that ensures the continuous COC education of Change Agents - also
inside our SA prisons (where it all began).
We are inspired by best business practices recommended by Jim Collins
in his best selling books: Good to Great; Great by Choice and How the Mighty
Falls - also exemplified by our sponsor LRMG Performance Agency. We
are conscious to always spin our primary flywheel. We offer COC Education
and educate Change Agents - and we do it really well.
We thank Family Davids for their third year of sponsorship of our
Helderstroom Prison Process. It is one of our key focuses to strengthen our
presence in further Western Cape Prisons over the next 5 years.
Another wonderful opportunity when presented with Classrooms

AS A BOARD we are accountable for our standard of governance and therefore
highly committed to ensure that we deliver what we promise. It begins with how
we live our SmilingOne Dream, walking the talk and fuelling these values into
building a strong and sustainable organisation.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT POLICY - the SmilingOne Foundations ﬁnancial
management is done in terms of the South African Auditing Standards and
audited ﬁnancial statements are available. Our external auditor HG Page
(Company Practice No 964700) provide oversight and monitoring.
QUALITY MANAGEMENT is integrated into the SmilingOne Foundations
management system. Project monitoring and evaluation is part of our total Quality
Management Policy.
OUR CHANGE AGENT COMMITTEE is tasked with monitoring of all our COC
projects. Each project undergoes monthly quality assurance through
comprehensive COC feedback reports from the project as well an evaluation by
the Chair of the Committee.
GOVERNANCE
CHANGE IN OUR BOARD - We say thank you to Nicky Thorp and
Chris Plam for your wonderful contribution to our board the past
couple of years and we wish you both great wind in your sails in
future adventures. We have welcomed Ilse van Niekerk, Franklin
Esau and Ridwaan Adams to our board of trustees. We deeply
