• Basal layer cuboidal to columnar resting on a
basement membrane

3. STRATIFIED SQUAMOUS
• Main protective epithelium
• Number variable
• Basal layer of cells
• Polyhedral cells
• Cells gradually flatten
• Shape of nucleus corresponds to the shape of
cells
• No spaces visible between the cells under the L/
M
• Two main varieties

4. Stratified squamous non
keratinized
• Thin flattened scale like surface cells with
flattened nuclei
• Moist surfaces of the body

6. St. Sq. KERATINIZED
• Surface layer of cells
are flattened without
nuclei
• Layer of protein
keratin
• Epidermis of the skin

7. Stratified columnar
• Two layer of columnar cells
• Basal layer resting on a basement
membrane
• Rare junction of st. sq. with pseudo
stratified ( oropharynx with nasopharynx)
• Larger ducts of exocrine gland

• Two to three layer

• Barrier or passage
• Antrum of the ovarian follicle duct of sweat
