Is the food alright? Feedback in
the ESL classroom
What are the similarities and
differences between how a waiter
asks for feedback and how a teacher
conducts it?

Similarities
•Waiter: “Are you enjoying the meal?
•Teacher: “Are you enjoying the activity/lesson?”.
• Customers complain food is cold or bland.
•Students that the activities are boring.
•The waiter might bring the wrong dish
•Teacher may prepare wrong activity
•Both waiter and teacher must react to keep customers happy.
•Customers fill in a comments card, ss give us feedback at the
end of the activity, month.
DIFFERENCES
Oral comments tend to be less truthful than those written down-more time?
In a restaurant the feedback goes from the customers to the
waiter/waitress.
A customer usually goes to a restaurant now and again.
A student comes to class twice a week. More or less truthful?
Customer-waiter feedback or “ Was it good?”

  • 2. Is the food alright? Feedback in the ESL classroom
  • 3. What are the similarities and differences between how a waiter asks for feedback and how a teacher conducts it? Please type your ideas in the chatbox!

Similarities •Waiter: “Are you enjoying the meal? •Teacher: “Are you enjoying the activity/lesson?”. • Customers complain food is cold or bland. •Students that the activities are boring. •The waiter might bring the wrong dish •Teacher may prepare wrong activity •Both waiter and teacher must react to keep customers happy. •Customers fill in a comments card, ss give us feedback at the end of the activity, month.
  • 5. DIFFERENCES Oral comments tend to be less truthful than those written down-more time? In a restaurant the feedback goes from the customers to the waiter/waitress. A customer usually goes to a restaurant now and again. A student comes to class twice a week. More or less truthful?

Yes/no questions not effective 1) Questions in pairs or groups Share orally or hand in? •The thing(s) I enjoyed most in this/last weeks lessons was/were… •The thing(s) I learnt this/last week that I did not know before was/were…. •The thing(s) I am going to do to help me remember what I learnt this/last week is/are…. To improve Practise pron of tricky words Review irregular past tenses by using mec- 3.com/ih and workbk exercises.
