Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
Because i am creating all of my work on the computer there will be no costs for equipment or travel
Available resources:
I am creating my book using a variety of programs on the computer such as Adobe Photoshop and images
from Google.
Quantity:
I am going to produce many copies as the book “Little Red Riding Hood” is a popular fairytale that many
people know of. So more people are likely to buy them.
Audience and Target Market:
The age of my audience is aged between 7-9 which is children who will read slightly more into depth than 4-5
but not much more. I think my book suits both genders as there is a female main character which girls can
relate to but there is also a lot in my book to interest boys too. The story can be working class or middle class
or high class because it is very well known.
Quality Factors:
So this book is as good quality as i can make it i will have to make sure i am on schedule all the time so i can
put as much time into one thing as everything else. The pacing of my story needs to be fluent and keep going
forward so my audience does not get bored.
Codes of Practice:
The publishers Association Code of Practise is what my work is covered by. This gives me protection and
whoever was to publish my book. Making sure i keep my statutory rights, making sure the work is credited to
the author.
Regulation:
I will have to make sure i follow the Obscene Publications Act and The Equality Act to make sure that i do not
include any features in my book that are homophobic, racist, ageist etc....and i need to make sure what i
produce is suitable for my audience target.
Copyright:
I need to make sure i do not steal or create a story too similar to someone’s piece of work This includes
images, font etc...i would have to make sure i was legally allowed to use them. However fairy tales are not
copyrighted so i am free to use them in any way i want.
Ethical Issues:
In production will have to consider representations. This means not to be derogative towards ethnic groups or
types of people such as the elderly, or French or black as it may be deemed offensive.
Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.
Resource:
Do you have
it? What do you need to do to get it?
Adobe Photoshop Yes
Microsoft Word Yes
Microsoft Powerpoint Yes
Photos No Google Images or a camera
computer yes Facilities at York College
Script yes Find one on the computer
Characters yes
I will create my characters on Photoshop using Rotascope and
shape task.
Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1:
I am creating my cartoon pig using rotascoping and elements of shape task in this session.
Session 2:
Here I am next creating and developing my other characters that appear in the book.
Session 3:
Creating page one of book which is in the cottage with Little Red Cap and the mother where she sends
her on her journey to the grandmothers house
Create the backgrounds and add in the characters and text
Session 4:
Create page 2 and 3 of book where Little Red Cap meets the wolf in the forest.
Add in Characters and text
Session 5:
4 and 5 Where the wolf goes to the grandmothers house
Session 6:
6 and 7 where the wolf eats the grandmother
Session 7:
8 and 9 Where the Woodcutter and Little Red Cap meet
Session 8:
Which is where The Woodcutter kills Little Red Cap and the wolf
Session 9:
12 Where the other child and the mother walk of together
Session 10:
General final tweaks and touches to improve book and the work that goes with it.
Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Trip hazards
Ensure that i only use water in the classroom as it will
cause less damage to equipment and that it is a bottle,
not a lid so it is less likely to spill.
Spilling drinks on equipment
To prevent myself and others from tripping over things i
must take caution to tuck objects under tables so they are
not in a place where people could trip.
Causing damage to eyes by staring at a computer screen
I must take a 5 minute break every hour to help my eyes.
This is because of the Display Screen Regulation.
