Eugen Popa: So, first things first. This is a three in one
question, like a nesscafe, right? So when, why and how did you
start doing hypnosis?
Scott Sandland: (...) Long story short, I was in a car accident, and I
was very damaged. I was an athlete, I was a water polo player, I trained at
the Olympic Training Center, and I had up two dislocated arms and a bunch
of other problems, the two dislocated shoulders being the primary concern.
And, like any athlete, I did the best I could do to hide those injuries from
every doctor and coach that I could, because I didn’t want to lose any of the
things I had going for me, which created more pain and more problems in
my life. (...) I was an ocean lifeguard and I was doing my recertification
swim which is 1000 meters swim, which is very doable, and I was just
having a very cold water, and my arms were injured and I’ve been trying to
do all sorts of things, and in the middle of my swim, my arm froze and
locked up and I couldn’t use my right arm. So I was about 600 meters out
in the middle of the ocean and my arm stopped working and hurt even more
than usual. So, when I got out of the water, with my arm locked into spot, a
whole bunch of people who were sitting there, looking at me, they all saw
there was something wrong.

So I went to doctors, and the doctors said “There are a lot of things
wrong with you”, and at that point I started looking for physical therapy
and options and things like that. After everything else failed, I went to a
hypnotist, and I didn’t believe in it, but I went to this woman and I just told
her: “Look, I just don’t believe in any on this, but I’m in so much pain, all
the time, I don’t sleep well, I am angry, I have got adrenaline and all of
those things ... How the hell can hypnosis help?” And she was completely
unimpressed by my skepticism, she was completely … you know … just
ready. And hypnosis worked the first time for me. You know, I got about
30% reduction on that first day. And because of that, I obviously went
back, and started learning how hypnosis works for pain control.
Eugen Popa: So yourmain area of expertise would be pain
management control?
Scott Sandland: I would say yes. In my first ten years of my career,
that was very much the primary thing I was working in, and which is why
Michael Ellner had been such a great mentor for me for so many years. A
lot of his work, I’ve learned on and built on with him a lot of different
things.

Eugen Popa: Is there something that you are most… like an
average of issues that you’re working with?
Scott Sandland: Smoking, I tend to see them 2 or 3 times, or 4 times.
People who grind their teeth, when they sleep, 2 or 3, 4 times, chronic pain
is somewhere between 4 and 6 times, that’s about right. Chronic anxiety is
usually about 5 to 8, I think they are a good ball parcks for me, but it’s a
ball park for my style, if I see people who get hang uo on that, well, they
say, “if you can’t do something to stop smoking in one session, you’re not
good”. I’m much more interested in long term than short term, so I can
hypnotize someone and glue him to the chair, in one session, but I’m
interested in what’ happens outside the room, so multiple sessions is not
something to be afraid of or to be discouraged by.

Eugen Popa: What is the most amazing result you had in a
hypnosis session?
Scott Sandland: It’s a fun one. A gentleman who owned a winery, a
vineyard, and had throat cancer, and due to that lost his ability to taste,
which, you know, it was career ending. But it’s also pleasure ending. And you
know, he made a bunch of money, he had employees and all of that, it was a
large operation, and so he outsourced all the jobs that were taste oriented, but
he lived in Napa, you know, which is a food and wine capital of earth, and
couldn’t taste anymore. And so, because I have been doing research in
neurology and how it works, and all that, it was just outside reading, I came
up with a really fun process, that basically (his sense of smell was still there),
and what we did was had him (because he had such an advanced palate and
he knew so much about flavor what we can do, and he knew how things
should smell and taste like and describing them accurately could help him)
what we did was use his sense of smell in his memory to hallucinate flavor
again. And so, we did three sessions, and based on those three sessions (I
mean, after the first session, it was no response, but after three, he was able to
enjoy food again). And he was using the smell, and the texture, all of the
other things to hallucinate a flavor. I think that’s … it’s certainly one of the
amazing ones, I like it a lot.

Eugen Popa: What was the best experience foryou both as a
trainerand as a therapist?
Scott Sandland: Best moment as a practitioner seeing clients is anytime I
work with a kid in pain. Getting a kid out of pain, and by kid I mean anybody
under 16. Getting those kids, and I’ve worked with the children at the dental
center center for a while, you know, working with little kids, like 5 or 6, but
getting kids who ‘ve been in chronic pain, getting a 15 years old girl
fibromyalgia, those kind of things, chronic life changing pain, to a teenager,
adolescent, transforming that is really really rewarding. I love that.
As an instructor, I would say, every once in a while I see either on
Hypnothoughts or Facebook or whatever, I see my former students talking
about what they’re doing, or answering a question and all of that, and you can
see that they are successful, you know.
I’ve got a couple of students that I helped teach HPTA at our school, who
got on to work with fortune 500 companies, which is… and seeing that they
are not only getting there only because of marketing, they are asked back
because they are getting results and they’re doing great, great work.
I see that as being really rewarding.
