Universal Stainless and Alloy Products 2012 – present
Manager, Corporate Supply Chain
Universal Stainless produces semi-finished and finished specialty steel long products and plate, including
nickel alloy, stainless steel, tool steel and aircraft quality low alloy steels, in a wide variety of grades and
product forms. Products, sold to service centers, forgers, re-rollers and original equipment manufacturers, are
further processed by our customers for use in aerospace, power generation, oil & gas and heavy equipment
manufacturing.
Responsible for creating processes to establish world-class leadtimes and delivery performance, reduce inventories, and
establish best-in-class customer service across four footprints. Created a group, separate from Operations, to manage
Supply Chain and Production Control. USAP produces finished and semi-finished long products and plate in a wide range
of alloys.
• Manage the continuous reduction of late orders and improvement of On-time delivery. Establish goals, action
plans, and timeline.
• Implement Finite Loading; identify and measure constraints, establish Plan Dates and Adherence to Plan
processing for all operations and all sequences across plants.
• Determine and manage cycle times and lead times for all products.
• Source vendors for increased vertical integration of products, negotiate short term and long term contracts,
manage all production at vendors, coordinate and conduct on site audits.
• Establish a partnership with a third party with world-class standing to manage ultra-sonic testing to exact
customer specifications within Universal sites. Specified, negotiated, and purchased $4M capital equipment for
three sites.
• Establish processes and procedures for startup and commercialization at the green field plant in North Jackson,
OH.
• Consult with Corporate VP of Engineering to establish CapEx projects and priorities for capability and capacity
issues.
• Manage all trials through the corporation.
• Manage the developing long-term relationship with Rolls Royce as a customer; single point of contact for Rolls
Royce.
• Implement Lean Value Stream Mapping, Process Mapping, and PFMEA to Rolls Royce standards.
• Single decision-maker for determining what to scrap at all plants.
Self-Employed – Bavin Consulting 2011 – 2012
Business System Consultant
• Day Spa, Lakeville, MA – on site consulting to determine the business benefits of a proposed acquisition-merger
and make a final recommendation to the owner. I had complete autonomy to turn the business around using
Lean. Fired and hired employees, implemented cellular layouts for customer service, 5-S work stations with
focus on point of use, value stream mapped the process, created work standards, measured daily profitability.
Developed and implemented a training program
• ALCOA – consulted at sites in GA; documented the current state, then developed fixed product value streams,
eliminated waste, and created written work standards.

• VSMPO-Tirus, Leetsdale, PA - developed a purchasing process and created Purchase Order and Ledger Entry
generating tools for non-inventory items. Created bar-code labels and a production procedure for labeling SKU’s
and scanning and reconciling physical inventory weekly.
• ALCOA – consulted at three sites in Tennessee and Mississippi; documented the current state, then developed
fixed product value streams, eliminated waste, and created written work standards.

Supply Chain & Production Control: 2007 - 2011
Leader for 21 operations
• Prioritize orders and schedule 24 production lines working 24-7; control inventory levels across the multi-site
supply chain; balance workloads on process flow-paths; control lead times through scheduling and rerouting
orders.
• Check accuracy of orders and work instructions before releasing to plant personnel.
• Calculate and update Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) for Lean Manufacturing efforts.
• Design, produce, interpret and distribute reports to control the supply chain through control of equipment loads
and backlogs, manage on-time delivery, expedited orders, and status of processing (rejections, testing, holds,

• Measure performance and work with supplying plants to deliver work-in-progress on time to the New Bedford
plant.
• Conduct production training and correct data recording errors (production floor support – union environment).
• First responder for Information Technology (IT) with data issues in three New England plants and four Service
Center facilities. Develop written production recording standards for corporate-wide use.
• Direct salaried and union personnel in daily production meetings
• Work with supervisors and crews to resolve customer issues and conflicting priorities.
• Partnered with other New Bedford managers and coached employees to implement behavioral based safety
programs modeled after DuPont’s world class safety program. Utilized a zero-tolerance approach.
• Managed special projects to develop Lean Manufacturing throughout the plants and service centers including
using toll processing procedures at service centers to eliminate wastes, defining universal terminology for
naming cut inventory (parent – sibling relationships), and standardizing order entry procedures to reduce
variation and quality problems due to misinterpreting customer specifications.
• Improved on-time delivery by 40%, reduced inventory by 25% to a record low level.
• Identified capacity and capability issue, worked with purchasing to obtain dedicated tooling, reallocated resources
and assets between sites, provided justification for CapEx, and coordinated the projects.
