2. HABSBURG SPAIN
Habsburg: Spain’s most notable dynasty between 1506 and 1700.
Ruled by Isabella I and Ferdinand II; Joanna and Philip;
Ferdinand II (again); Charles I, also known as Emperor Charles
V; Philip II; Philip III; Philip IV; and ending with Charles II.
At its height, Habsburg Spain’s Empire included territories in the
Americas , the East Indies, Africa, Austria, as well as Portugal,
for a time.
For over a hundred years, Habsburg Spain was the greatest
empire and was referred to as the “Age of Expans ion.”
3. HABSBURG SPAIN
The funding of wars brought on several bankruptcies
causing reoccurring inflation.
Spain’s economy relied much on gold and silver
imported from the New World.
Continued piracy attacks on Spanish fleets contributed
to inflation.
4. THE SPANISH EMPIRE
The kingdoms of Aragon and Castile were united by the
marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella, but not in an
administrative unity.
The Granada War of 1492 would exile Jews and Muslims who
would not convert to Christianity.
The discovery of the Americas by Columbus, was the
beginning of colonization for Spain.
5. THE SPANISH EMPIRE
Explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa conquered the native
peoples, in 1502, in what is now known as Colombia.
In 1510, Santa Maria la Antigua del Darien was Spain’s first
permanent American settlement.
During colonization, the Conquistadors brought disease,
weakening the native peoples of the Americas.
6. THE SPANISH EMPIRE
In southern Spain, Seville’s population, 25 percent perished
from the Great Plague of Seville during 1647 -1652.
Charles II, the last of the Habsburgs monarchy, willed the
empire to Philip V of the Bourdon monarchy upon his death.
During 1701 -1714, the War of the Spanish Succession was
over the joining of Spain and France under Bourdon rule.
7. THE SPANISH EMPIRE
The Spanish shipping trade increased and prospered after the
Seven Years War (1756 -1763).
Spanish manufacturers began to industrialize a growing
textile industry in the mid -1780s in Catalonia.
The improvement of Spain’s economy began again with the
mining of gold and silver in America and the plantations of
sugar.
