  2. Yep, I’m a librarian. I’m Jay Turner, the director of continuing education and training at the Georgia Public Library Service. My job is to help librarians be better librarians by providing them with the training they need to help people like you, and your parents, and your grand parents – the folks who visit the library. I also work with people, agencies, and associations in the state and across the country to advocate for libraries and improve library services so that libraries will remain relevant and vibrant in the future. In that sense, I’m more of a teacher/trainer than a librarian, but yes, I am a licensed librarian with a Masters Degree in Information Sciences.
  3. A little about my employer, the Georgia Public Library Service. We’re more of a consulting agency than a library where people come to check out books. Here’s a secret: don’t show up here looking to checkout books because we don’t have a library. GPLS employs several directors who work with libraries to make them better and stronger. We have an IT director and her team who helps libraries manage their networks and computers. We have a facilities director who helps libraries get money from the legislature to build, renovate, and maintain library buildings. We have a communications director who builds partnerships between businesses, non-profits, and libraries so that people in the community can do cool stuff, like going to the museum or Zoo Atlanta for free. And then you have me, the director of training who works exclusively with employees of libraries so that they can do their jobs like a BOSS! I’m responsible for finding out what needs people have for learning, and then creating and evaluating programs to meet those needs. For example, if I hear that there is a need to improve customer service, I’ll create and deliver customer service training. If I hear that people need more technology, I’ll get them trained up on technology. I also work across the state and across the country to raise the profile of libraries. I speak at conferences all over the country.
  4. Directs the overall operations of the State Library Continuing Education department. Sets strategic direction and priorities of department by performing continual needs assessment and statistical program evaluation. Determines the goals, mission, and objectives for a comprehensive statewide Continuing Education program for public library staff at all levels -- 3100 fulltime equivalents (FTE) according to the Institute of Museum and Library Services). Administers statewide e-learning program, the Georgia Library Education Access Network (GLEAN), and learning management system (LMS) for Georgia’s 63 public library systems. Assists State Librarian with budget development and Georgia Public Library Service contractual negotiations by providing input on departmental needs and priorities and conferring with Board of Regents to realize cost savings for Georgia Public Library Service programs. Develops classroom-based, online, and blended learning solutions to meet the training and development needs of Georgia’s public library staffs - 3100 fulltime equivalents (FTE) according to the Institute of Museum and Library Services). Delivers live and online workshops and classes for Georgia’s public library staffs. Facilitates live and online meetings of executive boards, committees, and taskforces of library associations and SLAs.
