Number of jobs
• The Indianapolis and Indiana unemployment rates continued to decline
over the past month to 4.2 and 4.6 percent, respectively, according to
the most recent estimates available from the BLS.
• For the first time in three months, Indianapolis’ total labor force did not
set a new record but remains at a healthy level. However, non-farm
employment is at the highest level ever recorded at 1,030,100 jobs.
• Unemployment for both the country as a whole and college graduates
remained flat at 5.1 and 2.5 percent, respectively.
• September’s jobs figures for the nation were below expectations, with
only 142,000 jobs added and August downwardly revised to 136,000.
Although some of this may be attributed to seasonality, strong external
fundamentals such as consumer confidence, spending and private
investment as well as labor metrics highlighting improved employee
confidence and an increasing number of job openings signal that
slower figures may be the result of an impending talent crunch.
