• Indianapolis unemployment rose to 4.9 percent, according to the most
recent estimates available from the BLS. The state’s unemployment
rate also increased to 4.7 percent. Even with this increase, the job
growth for the city continues to be well above the national growth rate.
• Although the unemployment rate has increased, the labor force is also
growing. The labor force has grown for six consecutive months and is
at its highest level since July of last year. This increase in the labor
force is likely to be contributing to the rising unemployment rate.
• Financial Activities and Education & Health Services had noteworthy
job growth, as both posted record high employment levels and
continued to show year-over-year growth.
• On the national level, the U.S. unemployment ticked up slightly to 5.0
percent as labor force participation rose to 63.0 percent. March
employment growth was slightly lower than February, but still strong
with 215,000 net new jobs.
