Student #1 Networked computers and communications systems are now part of the daily life of a significant percentage of the public all over the world because we are in a new era of computerization. Arguably, the most crucial importance to the development of the public policy choice that fueled this increase in networked computing was the introduction of public access to the Internet. The Internet, as described by Kurose & Ross (2013) is a worldwide computer network which provides a host of communication and information capabilities, that is made up of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols. The Clinton–Gore White House showed a high level of symbolic support for “information superhighways” which contributed to the popularization of the interest in the public access to the Internet, as well as the enthusiasm of Technology Journalists, business, and entertainment. The possibilities of the widespread public access to the Internet enabled significant developments in many applications, including electronic commerce (eCommerce), Electronic Publishing, distance learning like the Walden DIT program, virtual communities, and digital libraries. According to Noam (1995), the evolution of these new applications raised a lot of important questions and arguments about the social changes that could arise as a result of the widespread public use of the internet. Most of the arguments centered around whether electronic commerce, as portrayed by eBay and Amazon.com could gradually drive away the markets of physical stores. Noam (1995), further noted that many people also wondered whether widespread distance learning such as the programs in online Universities could provide new opportunities for an inexpensive and convenient home education that could become attractive enough to reduce the enthusiasm for place-based colleges and universities rapidly. Harnad (1991) and Fuller (1995) were concerned about the rapid development of electronic journals serving as a low-cost alternative to the increasingly expensive print journals. Furthermore, they pondered whether digital libraries would reduce the need for “brick and mortar” libraries and also the threat to community life if most social activities were to move from face-to-face, place-based settings to online forums. For the last 25 years, the relationships between social change and information and communication technologies (ICTs) has been substantially analyzed and empirically researched with the help of all these discussions and questions. Continuous Delivery can be a hard sell to product managers, even in small, healthy organisations. The benefits sound implausible, the costs high, and it’s really hard to understand all that it enables. However, CD has been hugely beneficial at the leading edge of product management. As deployment pipelines have taken root, there has also been a shift in how we see and measure user value. Take these trends together, and there’s been a giant leap forwards in how to prioritise work and judge its success. When our teams stopped throwing features into a black hole, and instead closed the loop with feedback, it had surprising knock-on effects, bad and good! Why did we choose it ? Because continuous delivery is not only about delivering fast with a good quality, that's also about delivering the right thing. Welcome in the continuous delivery of value.

For all we celebrate disruption, it can be, well, disruptive! Inside a business, nobody wants big lurches or major surprises. As a discipline, software engineering smoothed out releases through continuous delivery, but we on the business side still lurch in our strategy and choke on large budget chunks. I’ll use examples from government software that show exactly the wrong context for good product decisions. Within this, though, I’ll also show good examples of shortening feedback loops and product manager as “regulator” between fast-moving product teams and old-school leadership and funding models. It will leave you with an image of what good looks like and how you can play your part in getting your org there.

If you thought it was difficult bringing the Ops and Dev teams to the same table, let’s talk about security! Often housed in a separate team, security experts have no incentive to ship software, with a mission solely to minimise risk. This talk is a detailed case study of bringing security into DevOps. We’ll look at the challenges and tactics, from the suboptimal starting point of a highly regulated system with a history of negative media attention. It follows an Agile-aspiring Government IT team from the time when a deployable product was "finished" to when the application was first deployed many months later. This talk is about humans and systems - in particular how groups often need to flex beyond the bounds of what either side considers reasonable, in order to get a job done. We’ll talk about structural challenges, human challenges, and ultimately how we managed to break through them. There are no villains - everybody in this story is a hero, working relentlessly through obstacles of structure, time, law, and history. Always Be Continuously Delivering! Short introduction to Continuous Delivery and creating a deployment pipeline. Abstract: Databases often sit outside Continuous Delivery for a variety of reasons, good and bad. But if you want fast and reliable deployments, the database cannot remain separate. We’ll talk through the challenges and look at tools to automate database delivery, highlighting open source options. I’ll live demo a database change flowing to ‘production,’ giving a clear picture of a fully automated process. The session is for developers, ops people, and managers, who will come out understanding how to customise practices and toolsets, building a pipeline suited to their environment. The result will accelerate database delivery, while protecting the organisation’s most valuable asset: its data.

Delivering software is exciting, but usually for the wrong reasons: it’s stressful, frantic, and risky. You might think that Continuous Delivery would make this a million times worse, but it actually brings an aura of calm to the process, letting high-quality software changes flow unimpeded. No longer an exotic practice of the mystic monks of Etsy and Facebook, Continuous Delivery is taking hold even in famously laggard places (think gov.uk). It isn’t because of extreme requirements for speed - although this motivated the pioneers - it is because the shift in perspective is incredibly powerful for structuring effective teams and processes. In this session, you will see how Agile teams benefit from developing a Continuous Delivery pipeline and, drawing on examples from my experience and research, practical steps for your own team. Borrowing from the concept of mindfulness, this talk aims to bring some clarity and simplicity to the messy problems of software delivery.
