Do you need to organize a Career Day or Night for your local middle school or youth organization? Are you the person responsible for coordinating a "Bring Your Child To Work Day" program for your business? If either case, this presentation is for you!

An effective and engaging format in which students are required to discern the job responsibilities of a series of guests is presented. While the format was motivated by the 1950's and 1960's television show "What's My Line?" the exact process and rules of the program are not identical.

Students seem to be very interested in the session, asking numerous questions. When asked informally if they enjoyed the event and if they learned a lot the answers to both questions were unanimously "Yes."

  • DrRonShapiro Dr. Ronald Shapiro, Consultant, Leader, Manager, Presenter, Speaker at Dr. Ronald G. Shapiro What's My Job: An Effective Career Orientation Program For Middle School Students variations:

Variation 1 -- Instead of having one mystery guest in the final panel (see slides 10-12) in one variation of the program I have had four mystery guests (one relative for each of the four student participants). In this variation the student panelists need to identify which of the adult mystery guests belongs to them.

Variation 2 -- In variation #2 I have brought in five adult panelists (one of whom is not related to the any of the students). I seat three adult relatives and the non-related adult. The remaining adult returns to the audience. Thus, three students if responding accurately would identify their relative. The fourth would say 'None of the above.' Variation 2 works extremely well.

Variation 3 -- Some day I may try a third variation in which I have 2 relatives belonging to one student, one relative for two students, and 'none of the above' for one student.

Tip: In all three of these variations I would recommend only allowing a given question to be asked once. (Several years ago a student named Erin Ryan knew that most of the adult panelists would be using their cell phones much of the time. She also knew that her father did not leave his on. Thus, she identified her father by merely asking every adult panelist 'Do you leave your cell phone on?')

Note: A complete description of Variation 2 may be found in a paper entitled 'Mom and Dad: An Untapped Source for Career Information' which may be located on the eric.ed.gov website or via the Google search engine.

Shapiro What's My Job: An Effective Career Orientation Program For Middle School Students been well received by middle and high school students and their parents for several years. Parents have told me that attending this program (and especially the mystery guest panel)with their middle and high school students has helped to encourage meaningful parent-child and parent-teenager communication. 5 years ago
