Moreover, Tyler, Whitbeck, Hoyt, and Cauce (2004) pinpoint that these adolescents represent characters from all different genders and ethnicities. Hence, those who come from an ethnic minority are even at a higher risk of being exposed to numerous social ills, since they endeavor to even find acceptance within their individual communities. From 2002-2004, the UK government piloted the Expert Patient Programme of self-management training courses for patients with long-term conditions, and subsequently rolled the model out nationwide (I. Greener, 2008). Since it’s deployment, however, recent trends have shown growing public interest in engaging with the self-care of health outside of traditional NHS services (Bupa, 2012), and that technological disrupters such as social networks and apps have instead created a more immediate and accessible format in giving patients a forum to share feedback, experiences and learn from other patients on how to manage their own conditions (Corrie & Finch, 2015). While extensive studies have been made of patient-oriented social network platforms like PatientsLikeMe.com (Whitmore & Kempner, 2012; Tempini, 2014) - little is known about how patients informally create and share text-based and visual knowledge with each other via social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter. This paper contributes to the literature by critically examining patient behavior on these two platforms via analysis of the use of patient formulated hashtags linked to chronic autoimmune diseases and shared images used to represent chronic disease through the practices of daily self-care. I discuss how this use of mobile technology brings a new meaning to Foucault’s notion of ‘technologies of the self’, and how this adds to the reconfiguration of ‘expertise’ in matters of health and illness in general and the management of chronic illness in particular (Rose 2007). In the 21st Century it seems that patients are becoming more engaged in the formation of new biomedical subjectivity. Individuals informally use smartphones and more to perform the narration and technique of the biosocial self and become experts in the micro-constituents of factors needed for the self-care of their specific autoimmune/genetic illness. To this end, I also discuss how general healthy eating terms like #cleaneating have been appropriated by chronic illness communities with a focus on the biosocial - in the process of informally self-quantifying their experience of long-term conditions.

J Occup Health. 2021;63:e12226. | 1 of 11 https://doi.org/10.1002/1348-9585.12226 wileyonlinelibrary.com/journal/joh2 1 | INTRODUCTION Violence against nurses in their workplace is a major global problem that has received increased attention in recent years.1 Approximately 25% of registered nurses report being physically assaulted by a patient or family member, while over 50% reported exposure to verbal abuse or bullying.2 Nurses, who are primarily responsible for providing life- saving care to patients are victimized at a significantly higher rate than other healthcare professionals,3 and it is estimated that workplace violence causes 17.2% of nurses to leave their job every year.4 In the United States, workplace violence increased by 23% to become the second most common fatal event in 2016,5 accounting for 1.7 million nonfatal assaults and 900 workplace homicides each year.6 In addition, there has been an increase in workplace violence in US hospitals, increasing from 2 events per 100 beds in 2012 to 2.8 events per 100 beds in 2015.5 In 2016, hospitals and healthcare facilities invested $1.1 billion in security and training to prevent violence and had to spend $429 million on insurance, staffing, and medical care due to workplace violence.7 The absence of a universal definition for workplace violence within healthcare settings and the ambiguity about what constitutes a violent event currently compromise research on the prevalence and magnitude of this phenomenon. Furthermore, varying definitions and unclear criteria may lead to nurses failing to identify their experience as a form of workplace violence, which prevents it from being reported. Applying the concept analysis method to better understand the violence to which nursing staff are subjected in the workplace will demystify the factors at play, with the under- lying intention of preventing such violence. However, the details of these experiences and their associations with perceived quality of care are not well understood. Our study assessed multiple measures of perceived racial/ethnic discrimination in medical settings and investigated the locations and purported perpetrators of the discriminatory experiences within a population-based sample of 1,543 Black, White, Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Other adults. We used logistic regression to esti- mate associations between perceived discrimination in the medical setting and three quality of care indicators. Overall, 40% of the sample reported one or more types of perceived discrimination in a medical setting, with significant differences by race/ethnicity. Discrimination was perceived across health settings and from a variety of providers and staff. In adjusted logistic regression models, individuals reporting discrimination had more than twice the odds of reporting fair or poor quality of care (OR = 2.4 [95% CI: 1.4–4.3]). In addition, perceived discrimination in medical settings was significantly associated with report of not having enough time with the physician and not being as involved in decision-making as desired. These findings expand our understanding of perceived discriminatory experiences in health care and the consequences of it for patients, providers, and health care systems. This information is essential for identifying future provider interventions and improving the training of health care professionals.
