LSD is a hallucinogenic drug synthesized in 1938. It causes visual hallucinations and alters perceptions of time and self. LSD is typically taken orally by absorbing blotter paper, liquid drops, or tablets that have been soaked in the drug. Effects begin within 90 minutes and can last up to 12 hours, causing dilated pupils, increased heart rate, and sensations that sounds and colors are merging. Around 200,000 people use LSD for the first time each year according to surveys, taking it for its psychedelic and recreational effects.
2. What is LSD
lysergic acid diethylamide
• LSD is a Hallucinogenic. Hallucinogens are drugs
that cause hallucinations.
• The most common form is a small tablet form,
others include liquid and blotting paper.
• Albert Hofmann, a chemist working for Sandoz
Pharmaceutical, synthesized LSD for the first time
in 1938, in Basel, Switzerland, while looking for a
blood stimulant. However, its hallucinogenic
effects were unknown until 1943 when Hofmann
accidentally consumed some LSD.
3. Who’s using?
• According to the 2013 National Survey on Drug
Use and Health, 229,000 Americans ages 12 and
older reported current (past-month) use of LSD
and 33,000 reported current use of PCP
(Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration, 2013).
• The National Survey on Drug Use and Health
(NSDUH) reports LSD statistics and facts saying
more than 200,000 people use LSD for the first
time each year.
4. How do you use LSD
• Most commonly LSD will come in the form of
blotter paper that are small paper squares,
usually with designs on them, that have been
dipped in LSD. LSD is inexpensive to obtain with
each hit ranging from about $2 to $5.
• The user places the blotter paper, liquid drops, or
tablet on the tongue and waits for it to dissolve.
• The effects take 30-90 minutes to kick in and,
they can last for up to 12 hours.
5. Effects
• As previously stated the high can last anywhere between 8-12 hours
typically.
• A number of factors can come into when using drugs like LSD
including amount taken; the user’s personality, mood, and
expectations; and the surroundings in which the drug is used.
• . The physical effects include dilated pupils, higher body
temperature, increased heart rate and blood pressure, sweating,
loss of appetite, sleeplessness, dry mouth, and tremors.
• If taken in a large enough dose, the drug produces delusions and
visual hallucinations. The user’s sense of time and self changes.
Sensations may seem to “cross over,” giving the user the feeling of
hearing colors and seeing sounds.
