A presentation contains some hallucinogenic drugs that people misuse and some information about it.finally by dena ezzat , a pharmacist student in third year.
2. What is hallucinogenic drugs?
• Hallucinogens are a diverse group of drugs
that alter a person’s awareness of their
surroundings as well as their own thoughts
and feelings.
3. Causes of taking Hallucinogens.
• Historically, people have used
hallucinogens for religious or healing
rituals. More recently, people report using
these drugs for social or recreational
purposes, including to have fun, deal with
stress, have spiritual experiences, or just
to feel different.
6. • LSD is a Schedule I drug in the United States.
• It is manufactured from lysergic acid, which is found in the ergot
fungus that grows on rye and other grains.
• Known as “acid”. LSD is sold on the street in small tablets
(“microdots”), capsules or gelatin squares (“window panes”). It is
sometimes added to absorbent paper, which is then divided into
small squares decorated with designs or cartoon characters (“loony
toons”). Occasionally it is sold in liquid form.
Lysergic acid diethylamide is a classical
hallucinogen synthesized by Albert Hoffman
7. : LSD was used in European psychotherapy
clinics in an approach called psycholytic therapy, psychosis, pain
associated with cancer. by the end of the 1960s, the dangerous
side of LSD was revealed. Reports of accidents, mental
breakdowns, criminal acts.
the first effects are felt 30 to 45 minutes .
and may last 12 hours or longer. if taken by
visual perception of shapes, color , altered sounds, rapid heart
rate, increased body temperature, blood pressure , blood suger ,
insomnia dry mouth , tremors and seizures. Overdose causes
psichosis ,bad trip.
flash back.
11. DMT
(dimethyltryptamine).
• DMT is a white crystalline powder that is derived from certain plants found
in Mexico, South America, and parts of Asia,
• DMT is illegal in most countries, including the United States,
where it is classed as a Schedule I.
• DMT can be used in several different ways. Besides being cooked in a broth
(known as ayahuasca), it can be smoked in a pipe, snorted or, in rare cases,
injected. DMT was used in a natural or synthesized form.
• DMT typically makes a person hallucinate for about 30 to 45 minutes before
its effect wears off.
• DMT also called Dimitri, Fantasia, Businessman’s trip, 45-minute
psichosis.
12. History of use: DMT is possibly involved in psychosis, normal
attributes and experiences such as creativity, imagination and
dream states, maintenance of waking reality, altered states of
consciousness including religious and/or spiritual phenomena.
13. •Taking DMT can make you :
•see and hear things that aren’t there (hallucinate), which might be a good or
..bad experience
•feel like time and movement is speeding up or slowing down
•feel like colours and sounds are distorted, this is sometimes called ‘visuals’
•have double vision
•feel like you’re having an out-of-body experience
14. In South America, numerous indigenous cultures
used psilocybin mushrooms for spiritual, religious
and divination practices. This was of course halted
once the Spanish conquistadors established their
rule on the continent, but in remote areas these
practices endured uninterrupted.
In 1958, psilocybin was isolated by Albert
Hofmann
Psilocybin is thought to be inactive before
it dephosphorylates (loses a phosphate
group) by hydrolysis (which is the cleaving
of specific chemical bonds by water
addition), and this dephosphorylation
process turns it into psilocin (or 4-HO-
DMT).
15. Illegal since the 1970s, the psychedelic mushrooms are typically eaten fresh or
dried or brewed in tea. It is also common to consume bake psilocybin
mushrooms into food such as cake and eat them. Psilocybin mushrooms may
also be dried up and crushed into a powder that can be injected, sniffed, or put
into capsules and swallowed. Users generally begin to feel the effects between
20 minutes to 2 hours after ingestion; the effects typically last 3 to 6-hours and
include anxiety, restlessness, chills, and euphoria. In some instances, the effects
of mushrooms can last up to 3 days. The perception of changes in time and
feelings of relaxation can tempt people into misusing the mushroom.
Magic mushrooms (also known as
mush, magic, shrooms, mushrooms
and fungus delight)
16. • Short-term effects of magic mushrooms: mental effect.
• Emotions and senses may be heightened, and people may feel happy and
creative. They may laugh or giggle a lot, and experience a sense of mental and
emotional clarity.
• Magic mushrooms can also cause hallucinations and affects people's brains by:
• distorting their sense of reality (they see and hear things that are not there)
• mixing up their senses (they believe they can see music or hear colours)
• altering their sense of time
Some of the negative mental effects of taking psilocybin include:
•changes in mood light-headedness and loss of coordination anxiety and panic
attacks confusion and disorientation fear or paranoia .
•Physical effects : increased heart rate and blood pressure sweating and high
body temperature, often followed by chills and shivering loss of urinary control
Long-term effects of magic mushrooms: their use is linked to psychosis
17. Mescaline use was first witnessed in the 1800s where Native American tribes used
mescaline during sacred ceremonies.
In 1919 mescaline also became the first psychedelic to be synthesized.
A hallucination is a false perception through one of the senses that makes a person
see, hear or feel something that is not there.
3,4,5-Trimethoxyphenethylamine
• IT classified as Schedule I drugs, meaning they have no accepted medical use and a high
potential for abuse. Since 1965, the traditional ceremonial use of peyote by Native
Americans has been protected by federal law.
• Peyote can be used in several ways. Small disc-shaped buttons on the head of the cactus
can be dried and then eaten or brewed into peyote tea. Or the buttons can be ground into
a powder and smoked with tobacco or marijuana. Ground peyote powder can also be
placed in gel caps and swallowed.
• A synthetic version of mescaline comes in capsule or tablet form. A liquid form of
mescaline can be injected, but this method of use is not common.
• The effects of mescaline usually occur within one to two hours of use. Intense nausea and
vomiting may precede the drug’s hallucinogenic effects.
18. Physical
Effects
• Enlarged pupils
• Lack of appetite
• Rapid breathing
• Blurred vision
• Sweating and elevated body
temperature
• Increased salivation
• Heart palpitations
• Abdominal cramps and
diarrhea
• Impaired coordination
• Dizziness or headaches
• Tremors or shivering
• Weakness
• Tingling sensations
• Flushing
Psychological
Effects
• It’s common for
someone high on
mescaline to see
repeating geometric
patterns called form
constants. These
kaleidoscopic patterns
may look like tunnels,
honeycombs or
cobwebs.
• A phenomenon known
as synesthesia may also
occur.
• Other psicholygical
effect as
Euphoria, panic, anxiety.
or Depression
Long term effect
Some people who use peyote
will experience flashbacks to
hallucinations long after they
stop using the drug.
hallucinogen persisting
perception disorder, has also
been reported with other
psychedelic drugs.
19. Ketamine was first created
in 1962 by Dr. Calvin Stevens. ketamine was
subsequently selected for human trials, and
the first human anesthetic dose was
administered in 1964 by Dr. Edward
Domino and Dr. Guenter Corssen In 1966, they
published findings from the first clinical
experiences with ketamine, reporting its
anesthetic effects in 130 patients, aged 6
weeks to 86 years They also reported minimal
side effects and a lack of severe emergence
delirium compared to pcp. Ketalar (1970)
became the first preparation of ketamine. approved by (FDA) for human use.
20. • This is a Class B drug, which means it’s illegal to have for yourself, give away or sell.
• Aclear liquid, when used in medicine
• A grainy white or brown crystalline powder when sold on the street
• Tablets, although this is less common
• When snorted, ketamine normally takes about 15 minutes to take effect. When taken
orally, it will take longer, around 20 minutes to an hour.
• It can last around for 30 minutes to an hour, but the effects really depend on how
much you take.
Ketamine is a general anaesthetic so it reduces sensations in the
body. Trips can last for a couple of hours.
Taking ketamine can make you feel:
• dream-like and detached chilled.
• relaxed and happy.
• confused and nauseated.
21. If you take too much ketamine you may lose the ability to move and go into a ‘k-hole’. This
feels like your mind and body have separated and you can't to do anything about it –
which can be a very scary experience.
Regular ketamine use can cause:
• agitation
• panic attacks
• damage to short- and long-term memory
• depression, if taken frequently
25. • The pharmaceutical name for the designer drug is a-Pyrrolidinopentiophenone or
alpha-PVP.
• People who use Flakka can display cases of bizarre and uncontrollable behavior.
• Flakka can be smoked, vaped with an e-cigarette, snorted, injected, or swallowed.
When heated up, it gives off a foul-smelling smoke characterized as smelling like
dirty socks.
• In the news in late 2014 and 2015. Hospitals, doctors, police, and fire rescue crews
in Florida saw patients with symptoms and signs that included:
• Euphoric sensations.
• Rapid heart rate and palpitations.
• Increase in blood pressure.
• Alertness.
• Aggressive behavior.
• Long-term effects are not yet published. Flakka is one of the more recent synthetic
drugs and research into its effects isn't extensive. However, research that has been
conducted has shown that the drug can be toxic to the kidneys and cause renal
failure.
26. The immediate and long-term effects of
Flakka can rival some of the strongest crystal
meth and cocaine.
