2. Problem to goal
• Partners are crucial to our outcome pathway
• Need a strategy for outcome pathway
including activities of CGIAR and its partners
• Planning our activities guided by this strategy
• Partners and all CGIAR institutions
contributing to activities need to be properly
resourced and tasked
• Given expertise in the ESA group reflection is
needed how to cover all IDO’s
3. B - Goals IDO 1
• IDO 1 and 2 should not be restricted to
reducing vulnerability and intensification in a
mutually exclusive way. In IDO 2 resilience is
equally required. Similarly in IDO 1 there could
be pockets with intensification potential.
There is a need for more balanced write up
• Structure of activities is OK
• Needs broadening focus to include semi-arid
and sub-humid zones
4. Goals IDO 2
• OK with the structure
• The issue of intensifiable households has a risk
of excluding the poor and dis-advantaged
from IDO interventions
5. Other IDO’s
• Other IDO’s have not been discussed
• There is difference in perspective between all
IDO’s being equal and another view of
hierarchy that IDO 1 and 2 deliver on SLO’s
and others are supporting
• This needs examination and discussion
6. Cross cutting objectives in IDO’s
• The ESA team considered Youth and Gender,
Communication, Capacity Building and
Foresight
• At this moment we realize that gaps may exist
acknowledge that cross cutting issues need
proper attention
• This will be discussed during the ESA meeting
in Lilongwe in April
7. Do all activities make sense?
Could we reduce?
• Activities make sense when looked at in
isolation
• However, there has been little effort to look at
possibility to strengthen synergies
9. Management structure
• Strengthen the role of the IRT
• Regional leadership should be connected to
the CRP rather than the center
• Allocation of staff to the CRP should be an
institutional commitment
• Sufficient resources to implement regional
agendas
10. Methods development and systematic
approaches
• Not discussed
• Intuitive answer yes, within context of IDO’s
11. Key Socio economic variables
• Not discussed, needs attention for proper
characterization and impact assessment
• Personal thought:
– Read paper by Meadows on leverage points in
systems
– Meadows considers data and information little
effective in creating leverage and paradigm
change the most effective way to make systems
change
12. Long term effects of innovations
• There is a need to look at the long term effects
of interventions of CGIAR and other
stakeholders
• This is the new cross cutting foresight theme
of the CGIAR
• Systems CRP’s have opportunity to take a
leading role in this
