Objective
The main objective of this project is to carry out an
analysis on GIET campus in terms of optimising total
load, by different conservation approaches.
The best possible combination of load and energy
efficient methods to be used so as to reduce energy
use.

Importance of Energy Conservation
Energy conservation refers to the concept of
reducing energy consumption through using less of
an energy service.
Most of the energy we use cannot be reused and renewed.
Energy conservation is important when it comes to climate
change.
Energy conservation is needed to reduce the adverse
effect of pollution due to excessive use of fossil fuels.
Increasing energy demand is a drain to national economy.

7. Department of Electrical Engineering, GIET, Gunupur-765 022
Energy Audit is the key to a systematic approach for
decision-making in the area of energy conservation
management.
It attempts to balance the total energy inputs with its
use, and serves to identify all the energy streams in a
facility and quantifies energy usages.
Assessing the Energy conservation procedure 7
8. Department of Electrical Engineering, GIET, Gunupur-765 022
The primary objective of Energy Audit is to determine ways
to reduce energy consumption.
Energy Audit will help to understand more about the ways
energy and fuel are used in any industry, and help in
identifying where scope for improvement exists.
The Energy Audit would give a positive orientation to the
energy cost reduction, preventive maintenance and
quality control programs.
Need for Energy Audit 8
9. Department of Electrical Engineering, GIET, Gunupur-765 022
Electrical energy is measured in kilowatt-hours (KWH).
Energy and demand are the two items that usually
determine the electric bill. It is important to understand how
the electric bill is determined. This alone can often save
money, if not energy. So lighting and motors and some
miscellaneous items can be changed to improve electrical
efficiency.
Conservation Opportunities in
terms of Electrical loads

10. Department of Electrical Engineering, GIET, Gunupur-765 022
Energy Audit was conducted in the entire college
campus. Lighting load, HVAC load, motors load, total
load calculation etc., gathered the information in all
levels to finalize the total energy audit.
Result Analysis 10
11. Department of Electrical Engineering, GIET, Gunupur-765 022
The whole campus energy audit provided:
A baseline from which improvement can be measured.
A plan of action which will allow the organization to
improve their energy performance, reduce electricity
bills and better environment practice.
Share the positive results.
Implement new plan.
Evaluate and assess the success of the audit.
Identify problem areas and devise plans to tackle
problems.

Optimized use of light, like use of T5 tube lights, sensors in
libraries, LED lighting, running a separate line for lighting
load and voltage reduction for lighting load
Use of electronic Fan regulator
Use Electronic ballasts, The conventional choke
consumes 50 watts of electrical energy (for 40W tube)
while electronic ballast consumes only 30W thereby
saving 20W per tube

19. Result
According to the analysis in 2012 the units consumption
was 12, 62, 595 which had cost around 74, 64, 873Rs/- ,
then with increase in load in 2013 the unit consumption
raised to 14, 01, 792 which nearly had cost around 86, 47,
701Rs/-. Taking the expenses of these years there is an
increase of 15.84% from 2012 to 2013.
From 2014 onwards we started following energy
conservation procedures, due to which though the load
increased by 10% as we came up with a new R&D building
but the expenses on electricity bill decreased by 5.61%.

Energy plays a key role in achieving the desired
economic growth and energy conservation promises to fill
the gap between supply and demand.
Energy conservation accelerates supply side capacity,
operational efficiency improvements of power
generating stations, reduction of losses in transmission and
distribution, end-use efficiency and renewable
technologies thereby mitigating environmental pollution.
Conclusion 20
21. Future Scope
Energy conservation procedures can be followed to
construct Smart building. Smart building deliver useful
building services that make occupants productive (e.g.
illumination, thermal comfort, air quality, physical
security, sanitation and many more) at the lowest cost
and environmental impact over the building lifecycle.
