Familiarization with Web Tools
Z
Scope of the Lesson
• Web Browsers
• Mozilla Firefox
• Google Chrome
• Internet Explorer
• Safari
• Information Retrieval
• Google
• Yahoo
• Bing
Z
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the lesson, you will be
familiar and know the web tools and
recognize the usage of the search engines.
• Outline the current web browsers
according to its usage.
• Explain how to retrieve information
through keyword search.
Z
Learning Outcomes
• Know the functionalities of each of the
browsers and its advantages towards its
co-browsers.
• Differentiate briefly the search engines
and its uses.
Z
What is a Web Browser?
• What is this technology?
• A web browser or internet browser is
a software application for retrieving,
presenting and traversing information
resources on the World Wide Web.
Z
What is a Web Browser?
• What is this technology?
• Although browsers are primarily
intended to access the World Wide
Web, they can also be used to access
information provided by web servers in
private networks or files in file system.
Z
History
• The first browser was invented in 1990
by Mr. Tim Berners – Lee. It was called
worldwideweb (no spaces) and was later
renamed as Nexus.
• In 1993, browser software was further
innovated by Marc Andreessen with the
release of Mosaic (Later Netscape)
Z
History
• Microsoft responded with its Internet
Explorer in 1995, also heavily influenced
by Mosaic, initiating industry’s first
browser war.
• Opera debuted in 1996.
• January 1998 was also the month that
Netscape started the open source Mozilla
Project.
Z
History
• Google Chrome, was released in
September 2008.
How Browser Works?
• The browser’s main functionality is to
present the web source you choose, by
requesting it from the server and
displaying it on the browser window.
Z
How Browser Works?
• The resource is usually an HTML
document, but may also be a pdf, images,
video and other medias.
• The server program, gathers the request
from the web browser, tries to hunt for the
web page and then formulates a response.
• After that, the browser picks up all the
information coming in from the server and
does its best to display the web page.
Z
Add-ons
• Add-ons, also known as ActiveX
controls, browser extensions can improve
your experience on a website by providing
multimedia or interactive content, such as
animations.
• They help the browser program to
communicate with some special type of
internet files like adobe shockwave player
that is needed to play videos online.
Z
Browser Timeline
• worldwideweb
• 1st browser ever made.
• Created by Mr. Tim Berners – Lee.
• First version came in 1990.
• To remove confusion, it was later
named as Nexus.
Z
Browser Timeline
• worldwideweb
Z
Browser Timeline
• Mosaic
• Browser software was further
innovated by Mr. Marc Andreessen
• First version came in 1993
• In 1994, he made his company named
Netscape and changed Mosaic into
Netscape Navigator.
Z
Browser Timeline
• Mosaic
Z
Browser Timeline
• Internet Explorer
• Microsoft licensed Mosaic from
Spyglass as the basis of Internet
Explorer 1.0
• First version came in 1995.
• And thus browser war was started.
Z
Browser Timeline
• Internet Explorer
Z
Browser Timeline
• Opera
• Development of Opera web browser
began in 1994, when it was started as a
research project at Telenor.
• In 1995, the project branched out into
a separate company named Opera
Software ASA.
• First publicly available version
released in 1996.
Z
Browser Timeline
• Opera
Z
Browser Timeline
• Mozilla Firefox
• Netscape starts the open source
mozilla project.
• It was produced to build a competitive
open source browser.
• First release was in 2004.
Z
Browser Timeline
• Mozilla Firefox
Z
Browser Timeline
• Safari
• Until 1997, Apple Macintosh
computers were shipped with the
Netscape Navigator.
• Later for Mac OS, internet explorer
was used as a default browser.
• In January 7, 2013 at San Francisco,
Steve Jobs announced Safari.
Z
Browser Timeline
• Safari
Z
Browser Timeline
• Chrome
• A free web browser developed by
Google.
• It uses the same engine which is used
by Apple’s Safari. E.g. Web Kit.
• It was first released as a beta version
for Microsoft Windows in September 2,
2008.
Z
Browser Timeline
• Chrome
Z
Information Retrieval
• What is a Search Engine?
• Software that enables users to search
the internet or intranet using keywords.
• A program that acts as a catalogue for
the internet or intranet.
Z
Information Retrieval
• What is a Search Engine?
•A web search tool that automatically
visits websites (using crawlers), record
and indexes them within its database,
and generates results based on a user’s
criteria.
Z
Information Retrieval
•Popular Search Engines:
Z
Information Retrieval
• How do they work?
• Web Crawling
• Automated “Spider” that follows
links and then analyses content in
pages to determine what should be
indexed.
Z
Information Retrieval
• How do they work?
• Indexing
• Data about web pages are stored in
an index database for use in later
queries. Some search engines, such
as Google, store all part of the
source page (referred to as a cache)
as well as information about the web
pages.
Z
Information Retrieval
• How do they work?
• Searching & Results
• The engine looks up the index and
provides a listing of best-matching
web pages according to its criteria.
The usefulness of a search engine
depends on the relevance of the
result set it gives back.
Z
Information Retrieval
• When I search, I don’t get good
results…
• Four possible causes:
1. No Content
2. Bad Search Phrases
3. Bad Search Engine
4. Bad Content
Z
Information Retrieval
• When I search, I don’t get good
results…
• No Content
• There is no content that matches
your search query.
Z
Information Retrieval
• When I search, I don’t get good
results…
• Bad Search Query
• You are putting in really bad search
phrases.
Z
Information Retrieval
• When I search, I don’t get good
results…
• Bad Search Engine
• The search engine isn’t very good,
or isn’t searching the content that it
should be.
Z
Information Retrieval
• When I search, I don’t get good
results…
• Bad Content
• The content that you want exists,
but the metadata and text within the
page is not optimised for a search
engine.
Z
Google
• Verb “google” has become synonymous with
searching for information on the web.
• Has been the most popular search engine in the
last few years.
• Has raised the bar on search quality.
• Is innovative and dynamic.
Z
Google
Z
Yahoo!
• Synonymous with the dot-com boom, probably
the best known brand on the web.
• Started off as a web directory service in 1994,
acquired leading search engine technology in
2003.
• Has very strong advertising and e-commerce
partners.
Z
Yahoo!
Z
Live Search / MSN Search
• Synonymous with PC Software.
• Remember its victory in the browser wars with
Netscape.
• Developed its own search engine technology
only recently, officially launched in Feb. 2005.
• May link web search into its next version of
Windows.
Z
Live Search / MSN Search
Z
Lycos!
• One of the pioneers of the field.
• Introduced innovations that
inspired the creation of Google.
Z
Ask Jeeves
• Specializes in
natural language question answering.
• Search driven by Teoma Search Engine.
Z
Let’s call it a day,
Thank you!
